고등학생들의 글을 검토해 보면, 문장 단위에서 의사소통에 장애가 될 정도로 매우 심각한 오류들을 범하고 있음을 확인하게 된다. 이러한 문법적 오류는 학생들이 문장을 표현해 나가는 과정에서 발생하는 현상이다. 주어진 비문을 고쳐보기만 하는, 현행 교과서의 이해 중심, 결과 중심의 교정 활동만으로는 오류문의 생산을 줄이는 데 한계가 있다. 따라서 표현 중심의 문장 교육이 이루어져야 한다. 표현 중심의 문장 교육을 하려면 문장 단위 문법 교육과 쓰기 교육의 연계가 필요하다. 문장 단위 문법을 지식 문법으로만 기술해서는 학생들이 문장을 써나가는 데 문법적 도움을 받을 수 없기 때문이다. 교과서에서 분류하는 홑문장과 겹문장(안은문장, 이어진 문장)의 문장유형은 문장 표현 활동에 크게 도움이 되지 않는다. 기존에 논의되고 있는 국어 문장의 기본 문형의 개념은 문장 표현의 과정상 문장의 필수 성분과 그것들의 호응관계를 인식해 나가는 데 도움을 줄 수 있으므로 적극적으로 수용할 필요가 있다. 또한 단일문(홑문장과 안은 문장)과 접속문(이어진 문장)의 유형 분류는 표현의 리듬개념을 수용한 문장 유형의 새로운 분류 형태로, 학생들로 하여금 문장 표현의 과정에서 통사적 감각을 유지하게 하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다. 이러한 표현 중심의 문장 문법은 적절한 내용 구성과 연습을 통해 학생들의 문장 쓰기 활동에 내재화, 자동화될 수 있다. 본고는 이러한 표현 중심의 문장 문법을 토대로, 문장 표현 연습의 실제를 단계적으로 구안하였다. 이를 통해 학생들은 문법적으로 적절한 문장을 표현해내는 데 큰 도움을 받을 수 있을 것이다.

While checking over the writings of the high school students, it is quite noticeable that they make serious errors at sentence level in their written work. Those errors occur in the process of structuring sentences. This problem has called for the teaching expression-focused sentence writing beyond the mere comprehension-focused or result-focused correction activity. In order to teach the expression-focused writing, it is necessary to connect teaching syntax grammar with teaching writing. The knowledge of descriptive grammar itself doesn`t give much help to students for their writing. Classifying sentences into simple or complex sentences as practiced in the current textbooks is not much useful for structuring meaningful sentences. The concept of a basic sentence pattern which has been discussed needs to be accepted positively and actively since it is useful in perceiving the essential elements of a sentence and their correlation. In addition, classifying the sentence pattern into simple or complex one could be useful for the students to maintain their syntactic sense in the process of structuring meaningful sentences. This expression-focused grammar of sentence could be internalized in the written work of the students through an appropriate organizing of contents and its practice.
