이 글은 시민(소외계층) 인문학 교육의 실제를 경험적으로 정리한 후, 시민 인문학 교육이 갖는 의미를 통해 인문학의 활성화 방안을 논의하고 있다. 시민 인문학 교육은 첫째, 상대적 박탈감 속에 체념 상태로 살아가고 있는 사회적 약자들로 하여금 자아 존중감을 갖고 당당하게 자신의 삶을 일궈 갈 수 있는 기회를 제공하고 있다. 둘째, 그 동안 대학이라는 제도 교육에만 매몰되어 있던 인문학의 인문정신을 사회 속에서 회복하는 계기를 마련하고 있다. 셋째, 대학의 연구와 교육 활동의 성과를 사회에 환원하여, 인문학의 대중화와 사회화의 기틀을 마련하고, 다시 시민 인문학 교육은 대학의 연구와 교육 활동을 진작시키는 효과를 낳는다. 요컨대 시민과 호흡하는 실천 인문학은 대학의 연구와 사회 교육의 관계를 선순환 구조로 안착시킬 수 있다. 다시 말해서 시민 인문학 교육은 인문학과 민주주의, 인문학과 문화, 인문학과 시민사회의 윤리 등과 같은 인문학의 연구 주제를 심화시킬 수 있고, 또한 현실적으로 구현하는 실천적인 사회 교육의 현장으로 자리매김할 수도 있다.

This paper collects my thought on the civil humanities education for disadvantaged peoples through my teaching experiences and discusses the promoting way of it. Especially, this paper also examines the possibility to overcome the well known crisis of humanities in Korean society by the civil humanities education. The civil humanities education shows following results; Firstly, it provides the underprivileged, who have kept on living with passive resignation, with self-respect and chance to manage their own life fairly. Second, it has been setting up the social circumstances to recover the humanistic sprit from humanities, which was caught in an ivory tower called university. Thirdly, it returns the results of researches and education performed in universities to society, makes the basis of popularization and socialization of humanities and again gives feedback to researches and education of universities. In summary, the affirmative relationship between the researches performed in universities and social education can be formed by education of pratical humanities. In other words, civil education of humanities can give an impulsion to deepened researches on the relationships among humanities, democracy, culture, and civil society and get its position as a location of social education places.
