본 연구는 외국어 교육이 모국어의 습득 및 교육에 미치는 영향에 대한 다방면의 선행 연구들을 고찰함으로써 현재 한국에서 이루어지고 있는 영어교육이 우리의 모국어인 한국어 습득 및 한국어 교육에 어떠한 영향을 미칠 것인가를 예측해보고, 향후 한국어 교육의 방향성 및 지향점을 모색하고자 하였다. 외국어 교육이 모국어의 습득이나 사용에 미치는 영향에 관한 대부분의 선행 연구는 외국어의 학습이 모국어의 습득이나 발달에 그다지 큰 부정적인 영향을 미치지 않는다는 것을 보여준다. 외국어 교육의 부정적인 영향은 모국어의 쇠퇴에서 많이 일어나지만, 한국적 영어교육의 상황에서는 그 가능성이 극히 낮다. 또한, 모국어의 발음이나 문법, 학습자의 인지능력, 그리고 모국어 읽기나 쓰기 능력의 향상에는 외국어 교육이 부정적인 영향보다는 긍정적인 효과를 더 많이 보여주었다. 실제 우리나라의 영어 교육 상황에서 영어 교육이 모국어인 한국어의 습득이나 발달에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구는 아직까지 별로 이루어진 것이 없다. 영어 교육이 초, 중, 고등학교의 교과 과정에서 점차 중요해짐에 따라 상대적으로 한국어 교육의 위축을 우려하여 모국어 교육의 중요성을 강조하는 주장은 많이 있었으나, 구체적이고 실증적으로 영어 교육이 한국어 교육에 어떤 부정적 혹은 긍정적 효과를 갖고 오는지에 관한 연구는 거의 없다고 하겠다. 따라서 향후의 연구에서 부정적이든 긍정적이든 영어 교육이 우리의 모국어 습득과 발달에 미치는 영향을 상세하게 밝힐 수 있어야 하고, 그 결과에 따라 적절하고 올바른 방향으로 모국어 교육 정책 및 교육 과정을 수립하고 시행해야 할 것이다.

The present study reviews previous studies which have investigated the effects of foreign language education on the acquisition or education of native language, and explores an effective way of Korean language education which considers the positive or negative effects of English education on Korean language education. Most of negative effects of foreign language learning have been found in the area of native language attrition, which is not important in the context of English education in Korea. Positive effects have been more frequently reported than negative effects in the areas of native language pronunciation, grammar, learners` cognitive ability, and native language literacy. Unfortunately, there have been few studies which investigate the effects of English education on Korean language in Korea. Future studies which try to find the effects, positive or negative, of English education on many aspects of Korean language education are required for planning and implementing appropriate policies of Korean language education.
