현대사회는 사회적 의사소통 능력의 중요성을 강조하고 있으므로, 학습자들이 가장 먼저 접하게 되는 사회적 담화 양식인 토의 교육은 매우 중요하다. 이 연구의 목적은 토의 능력을 이루는 구성 요소를 통하여 토의 교육의 내용을 추출하는 것이다. 토의 능력은 토의자들이 협동적 사고력을 바탕으로 주제를 이해·분석·판단하고 합리적이고 비판적이며 균형 잡힌 익사소통을 할 수 있는 능력이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 토의 교육의 내용은 "토의 주제에 대한 이해·분석·판단", "토의를 합리적이고 비판적이며 균형 있게 이끌어가는 능력"이 되어야 한다. 이 교육 내용의 밑바탕에는 협동적 사고력이 깔려있어야 한다. 그리고 이러한 토의 교육의 내용은 각각 이해, 분석, 판단과 열린 태도, 말하기 듣기 전략 등으로 세분화시킬 수 있다. 이러한 구체적 토의 교육 내용을 통하여 학습자는 사회적 의사소통에 필요한 토의 능력을 신장시킬 수 있을 것이다.

Discussion education, a social conversation form, which learners encounter for the first time, is very significant because the modern society emphasizes social communicative competence. This study aims at examining the contents of discussion education through reconceptualizing the components of discussion competence. Discussion competence is the competence that a discussion participant can make a rational, critical, and balanced communication, being comprehend·analyze·judge group topics, being based on cooperative contemplative faculty. At this point, contents of discussion education is "comprehensive faculty·analytic thinking·judgment about a discussion theme" ; "a competence that leads rational, critical, and well-balanced discussion". Two contents of discussion education is based on cooperative contemplative faculty. And contents of discussion education is subdivided comprehend·analyze·judge and open attitude, speaking and listening strategy. A leaner can expand into a discussion competence, it may be necessary to social communication, through this concrete contents of discussion education.
