말과 글, 이는 문화의 한 부분으로 민족을 규정할 수 있는 조건이 된다. 본고는 조선 사인들의 언어와 문자에 대한 인식을 통해 중세 보편주의 세계관 속에서 조선사인의 인식을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 박제가와 같은 경우는 중국과 문화적인 동등성을 확보하기 위해서는 전면적으로 우리말을 버리고 화어를 익혀야 할 것으로 보았고 홍양호는 외교상의 필요에서 화어를 익힐 것을 주장하였음을 확인하였다. 또한 조선후기 화어에 대한 인식과 함께 동음, 즉 훈민정음에 대한 자각이 싹트게 되는데, 동음에 대한 자각은 한자의 음 표기와 관련이 있다. 따라서 이 시기 훈민정음에 대한 관심은 한자의 음을 정확하게 표기하여 한어를 익히는데 도움을 줄 수 있는 도구라는 인식에서 출발한 것이라는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 이와 아울러 조선사인들은 말과 글이 다르기 때문에 나타나는 문제에 대해서는 분명하게 인식하고 있었지만 아직은 시대적인 한계로 인하여 한자 한문 중심의 사고에서 벗어나지 못하고 있음을 확인하였다. 하지만 적어도 중국에 대한 ``나``를 인식하고 있었다는 점에서 중세보편주의 세계관에서 벗어날 수 있는 맹아의 일단을 확인할 수 있었다. 우리의 글로 문자생활을 하기까지는 훈민정음이 창제된 이후에도 많은 시간을 필요로 하였으며, 소위 선각적 지식인이라고 하는 인물들도 한문중심이라는 틀 안에서 쉽게 벗어나지 못하였다. 어렵게 공용문자로서의 지위를 획득하여 언문일치의 시대를 연 만큼 이를 소중하게 아끼고 다듬어 나가는 노력이 필요할 것이라고 생각한다.

Writing and speaking, as a part of culture, are a condition which can prescribe a nation. This essay inspected the Joseon gentry`s recognition in a world view of universalism of the Middle Ages through their understanding of writing and speaking. In result, it was confirmed that Park Je Ga had thought that not Korean but Chinese must be learned across the board for making sure of the cultural equality with China and Hong Yang Ho also had advocated that, however, because of just diplomatic need. In the later Joseon, with recognition of Chinese, consciousness of the same sound of the Korean script, Hunminjeongeum, which is related with marking the pronunciation of a Chinese character, occurred. Accordingly, it be ascertained that at this time an interest in Hunminjeongeum had started from regarding as a means to help learn Chinese as marking exactly the pronunciation of a Chinese character. In addition, this study noticed that the Joseon gentry had understood the problem from the difference between writing and speaking but by the limit of the day couldn`t have got out of the thought centering around Chinese characters or Chinese writing yet. However, at least, it is the first step in a germinal stage of being able to overcome a world view of universalism of the Middle Ages that they cognized themselves against China. They needed a lot of time after Hunminjeongeum had been created until using Korean and some of them, so called an intellectual of foresight, also freed themselves from the framework of the center of Chinese writing easily. As Korean winning a status as the public language in a hard way, the unification of the written and spoken language begins, so it is necessary to cherish and elaborate Korean.
