본 연구는 어린이 문학 연구와 어린이 문학 교육 연구의 기초적 바탕이자 선결 요건이라고 할 수 있는 어린이와 어린이 문학에 대한 역사적 의미를 탐구하려는 시도이다. 어린이가 누구인가를 모르고서 어린이 문학을 논할 수 없다는 점에서 둘은 서로 긴밀한 연관을 형성하고 있다. 특히 어린이와 어린이 문학 모두 완연한 근대의 산물이라는 점에서 새로운 방법적 시선에 의해 발견된 아동에 대한 역사적이고 철학적인 탐구가 요청된다. 최근 어린이 문학 연구가 본격화되면서 어린이 문학의 형성과 기원에 대한 의미 모색이 활발해 지고 있다. 그리하여 이 문제에 대한 격렬한 논쟁과 건강한 토론이 펼쳐지고 있는 것이 현 단계 어린이 문학 연구의 지형이라고 말할 수 있다. 하지만, 최남선과 방정환의 어린이 문학 운동에 대한 검토가 단순히 대립적 선택의 문제로 간주되어서는 안 될 것이며, 어린이 문학의 철학적 토대와 연관된 의미 있는 탐구가 이루어져야 한다. 곧, 소년과 어린이 그리고 동심의 올바른 의미 모색이 그것이다. 이러한 역사적 의미들은 현재적 과제와도 무관하지 않다. 이오덕의 일하는 아이들 이후 지금의 아이들을 위해 어린이 문학이 추구해야 할 가치가 무엇인가라는 질문이다. 곧, 단순히 현실주의라는 거대 담론의 포기로 귀결되어서는 곤란하며, 현실주의의 건강한 토대 위에서 다양한 분출을 모색하는 다양성과 다원주의로 이어져야 할 것이다. 또한, 동시대의 문제만이 아니라 기초 자료를 바탕으로 한 사적 정리 작업도 이루어져서 보다 온전한 아동문학과 교육의 연구 지형을 만들어 가야 한다.

This study aimed quest of historical meaning children and children`s literature that be conditioned children`s literature study and children`s literature education study. The question "Who is children?" is essential theme in children`s literature debate. Specially, because they are product of modern, we have to quest historically and philosophically them. Recently children`s literature study is concentrating on the formation and origin of children`s literature. But modern children`s literature movement is not oppositional selection problem but philosophical foundation and root. This historical meanings are linked to present times task with ``laboring children``. That is question of "What is pursuing value for now and here children in the children`s literature?" It is not abandon of realism but diverse spurt based on reality. And, We have to study basic material and literary history and it can more full study map in children`s literature.
