This article is to pursue the "internationality" or the "common ground" of the modern poetry. For this purpose I have selected and surveyed the poems by T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. They are generally considered as the forerunners of Modernism of the first half of the 20th century. Their representative works such as The Waste Land and The Cantos are sharing the technical traits which are especially devised for a better understanding of and the communication with the modern readers. I have surveyed three technical methods to make up the general complain that the modern poems are difficult and obscure to comprehend because of the juxtaposition of the fragmentary parts with no logical links. One of them is the use of "allusion" with citing or quoting from other writers` works, which is one of Eliot`s and Pound`s favorite techniques to deliver the poet`s personal experiences to the public. For the theoretical basis of this method, Eliot defines the term of "tradition" combined with "the historical sense." Secondly, there are the "mythical method" and the allegorical description of "clear visual images". The mythical method is to supply the modern poem with the cause-effect stories of the myths and the legends, which with the allegorical writing, contributes to controlling the seemingly unrelated parts of the poems and to enhancing the readers` responses to the modern poems. Lastly, Eliot and Pound try to make the utmost effect of the musical qualities of the words with the recurrent images, motifs and words. Eliot cultivates the "auditory imagination" of the words, while Pound expresses not only the natural, prosaic music of the ordinary speech but the thematical rhythm of the human society in accordance with the cyclic rhythm of nature. This method aims to make the incomprehensible religious experiences or the thematic ideas available to the modern readers. The survey of those modern techniques in Eliot`s and Pound`s poems shows us that they are the devices for making a "common ground" to overcome the international barriers as well as to communicate among the international readers with the esthetic experiences and the emotional sympathy.
