모더니즘 건축은 기능을 강조하지만, 정작 기하학적 추상에 매몰되어 일상생활과 유리되어 기능적이지 못한 측면을 보여준다. 건축에서 해체주의 이후 모더니즘과 기능주의에 대한 비판과 반성은 주도적인 흐름이다. 츄미와 누벨의 경우도 명백하게 이러한 특성을 보여준다. 그리하여 츄미의 경우에는 건축 공간이 갖는 기능을 단순한 기능이 아닌 사회적 기능으로 확장한다. 하지만 그가 말하는 건축의 사회적 기능은 러시아 구성주의자들이 말한`사회적 응축기`로서의 사회적 기능과는 전혀 거리가 먼 철학적 담론으로서의 사회적 기능을 의미한다. 한편 누벨의 경우 건축은 미학적 의지도 없는 기능주의 건축을 비판하고 미학적 측면의 복원을 강조한다. 하지만 츄미의라 빌레트 공원 설계나 누벨의 카르티에 재단 건물 디자인에서 나타나듯이, 이들의 건축은 철학적 미학적 담론의 표현수단으로 봄으로서 모더니즘이 그러한 것처럼 건축과 일상이 분리되는 아이러니가 발생한다.

Even though emphasizing the function of architecture, modern architecture reveals some fatal aspects that they are absorbed in the geometric abstraction and not really functional. The contemporary architects` critique of the modernism and functionalistic architecture became a main stream in the contemporary architecture since the emergence of the deconstructionism. Tschumi and Nouvel are among them. Tschumi doesn`t confine the `function` of architecture to the mere function, extending it to the social dimension. But the social functions he emphasizes have philosophical functions far from being socially functional as `social condensers` inaugurated by Russsian constructivists. And Nouvel criticizes severely modern architecture as architecture without any aesthetical intention, trying to restore the aesthetic dimensions in the architecture. But Tscumi`s design of Le Parc de La Villette or Nouvel`s design of the building of Cartier Foundations shows, their designs expose the irony that their works are separated from the ordinary life no less than the modern architectures were.
