야담에는 자기 정욕을 과감하게 나타냈다가 좌절하는 여성의 이야기가 많다. `담을 넘어가 선비에게 사랑을 고백하는 여성 이야기`군이 형성되었는데, 여성이 죽고 선비가 못 되는 이야기와 여성이 죽지 않고 선비가 잘 되는 이야기로 분화되었다. 여성 정욕의 존재를 의식하게 되었지만 그것을 인정할 수 없었던 남성 사대부의 입장이 더 강하게 반영된 경우다. 여성이 정욕을 과감하게 실현하는 상황이 창출되자 야담의 서술자는 남성 목격자를 등장시켰다. 정욕을 적극적으로 실현하는 여성의 행위를 가부장제의 근간을 흔드는 것으로 보고 응징하게 했다. 응징자는 애초 여성을 겁탈하려 했던 남성이다. 남성 응징자는 조금 전까지 자기가 겁탈하려 했던 여성이 다른 남자와 성행위를 하는 장면을 바라보기에 관음증을 나타냈다. 응징 과정에 성적·계급적 차별의식이 개입했다. 관음증의 상황에서 여성은 남성의 시선을 의식해야 하였다. 여성이 남성의 시선으로 자기를 보게 되었다. 이런 상황은 여성 정욕 서사에 관여한 여성 주체의 위기감을 불러왔다. 여성은 가부장제 사회에서 살아남기 위하여 정욕을 위장하거나 은폐하였다. 이런 여건에서 여성이 지인지감이나 현몽, 계시에 따라 남편감을 골라 사회 경제적 상승을 꽤하는 야담이 많이 산출되었다. 자기 경험에 대한 주체적 서술자가 되기 위해 여성이 활용한 서술방식이 `회상`이었다. 늙은 여성이 젊은 날 자기 몸의 정욕 경험을 회상한다. 그럼으로써 남성의 비난이나 조롱, 의심의 눈초리로부터 자유로운 서술공간을 확보했다. 여성 정욕담은 다음과 같은 궁극적 서술패턴을 창출했다. 나이든 여성이 젊은 날의 정욕 경험을 상대 남성에게 이야기한다. 정욕 경험에 대한 여성의 진술이 상대 남성으로 하여금 흥미를 갖게 하거나 감동하게 하여 변화하게 한다. 이것은 남녀가 정욕 경험을 공유하는 것인데, 이런 경험의 공유를 활력으로 삼아 새롭고 진정한 인간관계를 모색하기에 이르는 것이다. 이처럼 야담은 여성 정욕담을 서술하면서 인물 형상이나 서술 방식 면에서 역동적 변주 양상을 보였다.

This paper analyzes the ways in which women express and achieve their sexual desire and the narrative techniques in which those stories are created. In the relatively earlier era, many stories dealt with the women who bravely expressed their sexual desires but got spurned. These stories can be categorized as `stories about women who confess their love to the Seonbi(선비) by jumping over the walls`. In this category, there are two types of stories. One is that the woman dies and the Seonbi faces certain misfortune, the other is that the woman survives and the Seonbi also does not face any misfortune. This category shows that women acknowledge and express their sexual desire, but men can not accept women desires. Through these tales of female sexual desire, the male Sadaebu(사대부) tend to create an ideal image of Sadaebu. When women became more aggressive in realizing their sexual desire, a Sadaebu eyewitness character appeared in the narrative who witnesses a woman`s sexual behaviors. Women who frankly and earnestly practice their desire can be threats to the foundation of the patriarchy. This male witness plays a role of punishing these women. Interestingly this witness is a man who originally tries to rape those women. This man secretly observes through the peephole the scene in which the woman he originally attempted to rape engages in sexual intercourse with other man. He becomes a voyeur and makes an ethical punishment. In this act of punishment, sexual and class discrimination is usually involved, because the punished man normally belongs to the lower class. It is hard not to be conscious of the male gaze when the male image as a voyeur is foregrounded. Even women watch themselves through male gaze. Female desire is witnessed and expressed through male gaze and voice. This brings about the crisis of female subjectivity who participates in this narrative of female desire. Women learn to hide or disguise their sexual desire in order to survive in the patriarchal society. Under this circumstances, many Yadam stories emerge that women choose their spouses with the help of dream and certain revelation and achieve social and economical advancement. There are a few separate cases of women succeeding in achieving their own subjectivity by changing the voyeuristic mechanism of the patriarchal society. It is absolutely necessary to acquire their own narrative voices and gazes in order to depict proudly the ways in which women pursue their own desire. In this hostile atmosphere a female narrator chooses a narrative technique of `reminiscence`. This narrative technique makes it possible to create a narrative space without the intrusion of male criticism and derison. The narrative technique that allows the stories of female sexual desire to be fully realized is as follows: An old woman tells a young man about her sexual experiences from her younger days. There are two types of sexual experiences in those stories. One is aroused from the women`s natural sexual desire. The woman faithfully listens to and fulfills her body`s desire. The other is aroused by the man. The body is at the center of this experience in that the man`s appearance triggers the woman`s desire. In either cases, the narration of female sexual encounters interests, moves, and changes a the male listener or partner, which means that both woman and man share their sexual experiences. These common experiences help establish new and earnest human and sexual relationships between them.
