이 논문은 대하소설 <명주보월빙>의 여성수난담의 양상을 고찰하고 그로부터 서술자의식을 추출하는 것을 목적으로 하여 기획되었다. <명주보월빙>의 여성주동인물은 가정내적으로, 그리고 여성으로부터 수난을 당한다는 공통점을 지니고 있다. 이들 여성들은 가장이 제 역할을 하지 못하거나 함께 남편을 섬기는 동렬 때문에, 또는 남편의 과도한 성욕 때문에 고난을 겪게 된다. 이 여성들은 훼절의 모함을 입거나 굶어 죽을 정도의 고난을 겪기도 하지만 그것은 유교 이념을 전파하려는 수단이라는 점에서 다분히 과정적이고 실존적인 고난이라기보다는 목적적이고 추상적인 고난이다. 다양한 고난 가운데 육체적 고난이 주로 부각되어 있고 고난의 과정에서 그녀들은 남복으로 개착하여 길을 헤맨다. 그녀들은 결국 초월적 존재와 공간의 도움에 힘입어 편안히 있게 되는데 이러한 장치는 운명결정론을 보여주는 서술자의 의도가 개입된 것이다. 이들 여성들은 스스로 고난을 해결하는데 이러한 면은 이들의 작품 내적 위상을 드러내는 것이면서 표면적으로는 남성이 주인공이지만 이면적으로는 여성이 주인공이라는 점을 보여주는 표지이다. <명주보월빙>에서 수난을 당하는 여성들은 심한 육체적 고난을 겪으면서도 침묵하며 자신의 수난을 언어로 발설하지 않는다. 이러한 면은 그녀들이 유교 이념을 매우 강하게 간직하고 있다는 점과 무관하지 않다. 결국 이는 가부장제를 수호하려는 서술자의 의식이 스며들어 있는 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 다른 한편으로 서술자는 의도하지 않았을 수 있지만, 여성이 극심한 고통을 겪으면서도 끝내는 그것을 극복하는 과정을 통해 독자는 일정하게 정서적 영향을 받았다는 점을 간과해서는 안 될 것이다.

This thesis aims at considering aspects of women`s sufferings in saga Myeongjubowolbing and abstracting a narrator`s awareness from it. Heroins in Myeongjubowolbing have sufferings in homes and from women in common. These women suffer because the head of a family does not play his role, or because the another wives of her husband or because of their husbands` strong sexual desire. They are entrapped to surrendering their integrity or are close to hunger to die. But these can be purposeful and abstract sufferings rather than realistic sufferings in that they are means to spread Confucianism. Among various sufferings, physical sufferings, especially, are brought into relief and these women wear men`s clothes and lost their ways. After all, they are helped by transcendental being and the place and get comfortable, which is intended by a narrator who shows his fate determinism. These women overcome their sufferings by themselves, which shows their status in a novel and which shows men are heroes only on surface area but women is real heroes. The women who suffer in Myeongjubowolbing suffer from physical pains but they don`t talk about their sufferings. These aspects are related with the fact that they have strong Confucianism. This also shows a narrator`s awareness that he tries to preserve a patriarchal system. On the other hand, even though a narrator was not likely to intend, he or she must remember that readers were emotionally influenced by the process that the women go through and overcome sufferings.
