서양철학 1세대 가운데 고형곤과 박종홍은 분명한 철학적 문제의식을 지니고 동서철학의 회통을 시도하였다. 이들은 20세기 한국철학에 커다란 족적을 남겼을 뿐만 아니라, 서양 철학자들의 철학사상을 해석하는데 머물지 않고, 동서를 가로지르는 통합적 사유를 펼쳤다. 이 논문의 목적은 이들이 서구근대라는 이질적 문명과의 접촉 속에서 전통철학을 긍정적으로 보게 된 철학적 문제의식이 무엇인지를 해명하고, 최근 동아시아 담론에서 쟁점이 되고 있는 부분과 관련하여 비판적으로 고찰하는데 있다. 이를 통해 동서철학의 회 통은 문화적 민족주의의 편협함을 넘어서, 동서 문명이 조우한 20세기 한국 근현대의 사상사적 맥락 속에서 이해되어야 한다는 점, 특정 국가나 지역의 특유한 문화적 전통에 특권을 부여하는 사상적 패권주의를 극복하는 방식이 되어야 한다는 점, 전통철학의 탐구에서 존재론적 접근과 지식사회학적 접근의 유기적 연관이 필요하다는 점을 부각시키려 하였다.

Ko Hyung-Gon and Park Chong-Hong, among the first generation of western philosophy, have tried to unionize both oriental and western philosophy with obvious philosophical concerns. They not only left their large mark in korean philosophy of the twentieth century, but opened integrative thought crossing between orient and west above interpreting western philosophers, thought. The purpose of this article is to make clear their philosophical concerns that they positively appreciate Korean traditional philosophy in the process of contacting modern European civilization distinctive to us, moreover to critically review the issues connected with the East Asian Discourse in resent years. In such way, this article remarked three points; trying to unionize both oriental and western philosophy is located in the historical context of Korean modern thought in the twentieth century which the Eastern civilization encounters the Western civilization, beyond the inclination of cultural nationalism; such trying overcomes the hegemonical way of giving a privilege on cultural tradition proper to specially fixed nation or region; in the research of Korean traditional philosophy, approach in sociology of knowledge and ontology is organically connected.
