본 연구는 교과목 유아수학교육에서 유아교육과 2학년 41명을 대상으로 2007년 9월초부터 12월 중순까지 15주 동안 실행한 것으로 대학수업에서 대화를 통한 지식구성의 경험을 들여다보고자 하는 것이다. 학습자들은 듣는 입장에서 대화를 통한 지식구성과정에서 다양한 어려움을 느끼게 되었으며, 이는 교수자와도 밀접한 관련이 있는 것이다. 공통의 맥락으로 제공된 텍스트를 읽지 않아 맥락에서 벗어난 대화를 하였고, 대화의 과정 중에 말의 차례 갖기, 다름에 대한 부정, 생각을 대화로 드러내는데 어려움이 있었다. 대화를 통한 지식구성에 대한 경험은 가르치는 자와 배우는 자로 이분법으로 나뉘지 않고 서로 함께 가르치고 배우는 관계가 되었다. 학습자들은 자신의 이해를 언어로 드러냄으로써 능력이 드러났으며, 그러한 동료들의 드러남은 다른 학습자에게 학습의 동기유발로 작용되었고, 학습주체로서 책임감을 느끼게 되었다. 이해를 드러내는 동료들의 언어로 학습자들은 배움의 통로가 교사에서 동료로 전환되었다. 그로인해 big idea를 만들어보는 경험을 하였고, 이해의 지평을 넓힐 수 있었다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the significance of knowledge construction by having dialogues with classmates in college-level classes. Forty one sophomore students at an early childhood education department in a college have participated in one of their required classes for one semester since September, 2007. The learners seemed to have much difficulty constructing knowledge through dialogues as they have been used to lecture-based instruction which has much to do with the teachers. They often failed to preview text materials before the class, thus they talked about something different from the context. They also showed a lack of taking turns in dialogues, accepting differences in one another, and presenting their opinions. The experience of constructing knowledge through dialogues showed that there was no traditional division of teachers and learners. With dialogue activities, the teacher and learners not only taught but also learned from each others. The learners showed their understanding through their own expression in class dialogues, which stimulated others to be more responsible as active learners. The direction of the instruction has been changed into peer groups from teachers. It helped them establish their own "big idea" and broaden their understanding.
