본 연구의 목적은 국문장편소설의 중층적 서술양상과 서술의식을 논의하는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 그간 주도적 스토리 라인을 통해 국문장편소설을 읽었던 방식과는 달리 부차적 스토리 라인과 주도적 서사논리와 분열을 일으키는 서술을 통해 국문장편소설의 중층적 서술양상과 서술의식을 살피게 된다. 국문장편소설의 중층적 서술양상은 크게 네 가지로 나타난다. 가부장의 폭력성을 비판하는 서술과 영웅호걸/대현군자와 요조숙녀에 대한 비판적 서술은 일부다처제 하에서 가부장은 어떤 자질을 가지고 있어야 하고, 순종과 겸손을 중요한 행동 규범으로 삼아야 한다고 교육받은 사대부 여성은 현실적 맥락에서 부덕(婦德)과 여도(女道)를 어떻게 드러내는 것이 바람직한가를 문제제기하고 있다. 또한 여성의 질투를 동정적으로 바라보는 서술에서는 여성의 질투와 애정에 대한 현실적 응시가 드러나고 사대부 여성들의 내면적 욕망을 용인하는 의식을 읽을 수 있다. 한편으로 애처가/공처가 남편을 재현하는 서술은 삽화에서 주로 나타나는데 아내가 우위에 있는 사대부 부부의 현실적인 부부상을 재현한다. 이런 삽화는 시대나 신분의 고하를 막론하고 어디서나 있을 수 있는 보편적인 부부의 모습일 수 있다. 그러나 여성 독자의 현실적 처지와 욕망은 텍스트 전반에서 연속적이고 주도적인 흐름을 통해서 그 의미를 전면적으로 드러내지 못한다. 한담이나 삽화와 같은 부차적 스토리 라인에서 단속적이고 간헐적으로 그 의미를 드러내게 된다. 이것은 사대부 여성 독자층의 현실적이고 자유로운 의식을 국문장편소설 속에 기입하는 방법이 된다.

The purpose of the current study is to discuss layered narrative aspects and consciousness of Korean long piece novels. The study examines layered narrative aspects and narrative consciousness of Korean long piece novels through sub story line. Narration criticizing violence of a head of a family and critical narration of heroes, gentlemen and ladies of refined manners show due consideration to quality of a head of a family and realistic unworthiness. In addition, narration looking at jealousy of women with sympathy shows a realistic stare on jealousy and love of women. Here we can read consciousness of women in noble families acception internal desire. On the other hand, narration about devoted husbands and hen-pecked husbands reproduces reality of couples of noble families in which wives are higher than husbands. This can be the image of universal couples regardless of times and classes. However, this desire of female readers is not expressed consecutively as a main story line in the entire text, revealing the meaning in a sub story line.
