이 글은 중등학교의 국어교육에서 어떤 방향에서 다문화 학습자를 고려하여 교육할 것인가를 논의하는 데 목적이 있다. 중등학교 교실에서 국제결혼에 따른 다문화 학습자들을 찾아보는 것은 이제 낯설지 않은 일이 되었다. 매우 많은 수의 다문화 학습자들이 초등학교를 거쳐 중등학교 단계로 진입하고 있기 때문이다. 다문화 학습자들은 언어적 환경과 문화적 환경이 이질적이므로 지금까지 유지해 온 국어교육의 틀을 통해서는 국어교육의 목표를 온전히 실현하기 어렵다. 현재 유지하고 있는 국어교육의 틀은 다문화를 전제하지 않은 상황에서 구성되었다. 그러므로 현재 유지하고 있는 국어교육의 조건들을 일부 조정함으로써 좀더 바람직하고 효율적인 국어교육을 전개할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 이 글에서는 이러한 방향을 네 가지로 논의하였다. 첫째는 국어교육 및 국어 능력의 개념 변화, 둘째는 국어 수업 문화의 수정, 셋째는 학습 언어에 대한 교육과 지도, 넷째는 국어교과서 구성의 변화 모색이다. 이와 아울러 다문화 학습자들의 학습 동기와 학습 효능감을 높이기 위한 방안 모색을 강조하였다. 청소년기 학생들의 공통적 특징은 학습동기의 감소인데, 환경이 다른 다문화 학습자들은 이러한 문제 상황에 노출될 가능성이 훨씬 더 높기 때문이다.

This paper investigated how to educate multicultural learners in secondary schools. It is ordinary situation to find multicultural learners in secondary classroom nowadays. Many multicultural learners are entering the secondary schools after graduating elementary schools. Because they have unfamiliar environment from other Korean native students, it is necessary to modify the last frame of Korean Language education and curriculum. When the frame of them reform for multicultural students, there are efficient and better instruction in Korean Language education. Therefore this paper conclude that these are four the directions on Korean language education in secondary schools. First, revising the concepts of Korean language and Korean language competence, second, reforming the classroom culture of Korea secondary school for multicultural students. Third, teaching the learning words, or vocabulary for learning in content area subjects. In addition to these directions, it is important for multicultural students to activate the learning motivation and learning efficacy. multicultural students need more bigger motivation to engage learning against Korea native students.
