방언을 표준어와 대립되는 언어, 즉 비표준어로 이해했을 때, 표준어 교육을 목적으로 하는 국어 교육에서 방언이 차지할 자리는 없다. 그러나 방언은 독자적인 체계를 갖춘 언어이며, 해당 지역 사람들의 삶과 문화를 반영하는 다양한 어휘들을 보유하고 있다. 방언은 생생한 표현력과 그것을 말하는 사람들의 정감이 그대로 반영된 아름다운 우리말의 전형이다. 또한 문헌이 보여 주지 못하는 언어의 선사 시대까지 언어의 역사를 거슬러 올라가게 만드는 귀중한 언어 자료들이 방언에 남아 있는 수가 많다. 이러한 가치를 갖는 방언을 단순히 표준어가 아니라는 이유에서 홀대하고 폄하하는 일은, 우리말의 다양성을 해치고 소중한 무형의 무화유산을 파괴하는 문화적 비극이라 부를 만하다. 그러므로 학교 현장에서 방언을 일정 부분 교육의 대상으로 삼을 필요가 있는 것이다. 구체적으로 방언을 교육할 때는 방언을 사용하는 사람들이 자긍심을 잃지 않도록 우리말의 다양성에 대해 가르칠 필요가 있다. 또한 방언의 풍부한 어휘력과 방언이 무형 문화유산이라는 사실도 강조할 필요가 있을 것이다. 그밖에도 방언은 해당 지역민을 공동체로 한데 묶는 표지의 구실도 하며, 방언이 고유한 체계를 갖기 때문에 서로 다른 방언을 사용하는 사람들이 의사소통을 할 때에는 상대의 언어 체계를 존중할 필요가 있다는 사실도 가르쳐야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 언어적 차이 때문에 불필요한 오해를 불러일으킬 수가 있기 때문이다.
Dialect has been thought to be a non-standard, discourteous language. However recent investigations show that there are lots of positive aspects in Korean dialect. Most of all, Korean dialect has more expressive capability than standard Korean in that dialect often has words having no semantic equivalents in standard language. It tends to use more native words than standard language which favors Sino-Korean or foreign words. Therefore if Korean dialect gets a chance to be taught in school, young Korean generation can learn the following facts. (1) Even though one speak in dialect in capital city or other places outside of his or her native area in Korea, he or she doesn`t have to suffer from an inferiority complex. For every dialect as well as standard language has its own system and equal value. (2) Because a dialect is a mirror which reflects culture of a region, if one learn the dialect, he or she can understand the mind, culture and people of the region. (3) A dialect is a marker of the community by which members of the community can tell themselves from other people. Therefore the best way to touch hearts of the members is to communicate in the same dialect. (4) Misunderstanding from dialectal difference sometimes creates emotional conflicts among the speakers of different dialects, which could be settled easily if one had a knowledge of the dialect.
