The purpose of this thesis is to research into transcendentalism in Saul Bellow`s Humboldt`s Gift. First of all, it is necessary to provide a dear definition for the word "transcendentalism" as used in this paper. Transcendentalism is an idea which attaches great importance to spiritual communion with God, unity with the universe, and consciousness transcending the ego. In addition, it holds that human beings are happy when they harmonize with nature, that is to say, God`s symbolic representation, through a philanthropic spirit of brotherhood and a return to nature. In Humboldt`s Gift, Charlie Citrine is harassed by the panic of death early in life, so that he cannot attend Humboldt`s funeral or even allow himself to view the dosed casket. On the day that Humboldt and his mother`s bodies are moved from one grave to another, Citrine finds out that death is not a dreadful reality to confront eventually, but a rite of passage so that one may return to the spiritual world. Finally, he looks at the transcendental light as having something in common with God, realizing the state of nothingness. In conclusion, it is clear that Bellow`s transcendental idea is based upon Emerson`s transcendentalism. By the way, the fact that we can`t overlook is that Bellow`s protagonists perform the role as a mission of the transcendental truth, In the same way, Charlie Citrine, the protagonist of Humboldt`s Gift, also fights against the social contradiction and depravity to save America. He is sure that his mission should not only have a sense of duty to accomplish his responsibility for the mankind but discover the truth buried under the chips of a falsehood in this world.
