American romance, unlike European romance which is usually melodramatic based on the typical love story, is to tell the truth, exploring metaphysical matters such as free will, justice, democracy, humanity and civilization. In particular, the main concern of Melville`s romance delineates human being`s identity and `life in life` and an individual`s political voice for the reform and enlightenment of American society. One of the important purposes of Melville`s romance is, also, to represent human characteristics through the recollections and meditation of the relations between man and history developed in his narratives. To present this effectively, Melville adopts his own romance style with various techniques including irony, allegory and paradox, which implies his attempt to resist the constraints of imperfect language, hypocritical religion, and social injustice. As for its important features, Melville suggests the implications of moonlight, gray, light, shadows, and white as symbolic or metaphorical elements. Those elements enable his discourse to project the internal or hidden mystery and inscrutability of humans and society; this results in contributing to making up a foundation for American romance as a powerful genre for the philosophical and political narrative. Melville`s romance with other American writer`s contributes to making American fantasy, and helps set a new agenda for the literary studies of not only America but other worlds.
