Multicultural Education for Young Children in 21st Centuries

Korean society are becoming more multicultual in recent years due to several changes. Most of all, number of foreign workers and inter-racial marriages have drastically increased in recent years. The government estimates more than 700, 000 foreigners work in Korea. It is also expected that the number of registration of inter-racial marriages will continue to grow. Children from these families are reported to have difficulties in adjusting to the society. These demographic changes in our society made effects on the way we teach our young children in early childhood settings. This study examined the demographic changes in our societyand its impact to early childhood education settings, and made reviews of literature regarding multicultural education in Korea. Several concepts and principles for multicultural education for young children and their teachers were suggested.
