Among the numerous local traditional festivities in Italy I would like to present the Palio of Asti. In Italy, various horse races are celebrated but the most important is the Palio of Piedmont which is usually held in September. The Palio, with nine centuries of history and changing fortunes bright or less since 1967 is reborn in all its grandeur. The Palio consists of a horse race among the 21 villages of the city and surrounding countryside. This is a race of three laps in the trapezoidal shaped Alfieri public square. The festivity is carefully prepared by every village. At the eve of the event there are final practices that end with rich dinners of appeasement in every district. The Palio is preceded by a procession with more than 1200 people in medieval costume to commemorate historic moments from the past of Asti. It`s indeed a unique celebration that fascinates visitors the most. They are living images representing facts really happened in history Astesiano. There are other interesting activities at the sideline which are: the flag-wavers, with a delicate art parade of flags on Thursday before the Palio. On Friday, there is the market of the Palio in which every district wrapped its own souvenir. Obviously, to get to know and enjoy the festive atmosphere of those days, it is advisable that one participates in person by entering into the life of one of the villages.
