이 논문은 개화기 국어교과서가 가지는 국어교육사적 의의를 밝혀내는 데 가장 큰 목적을 두고 있다. 개화기에 들어서면서부터 국문이 국가적 의사소통망에서 가장 중요한 역할을 담당함에 따라, 국문에 대한 교육이 시작되고, 국어교과서가 다양하게 개발되었다. 개화기 국어교과서의 가장 중요한 목적은, 문명개화와 서구 문물에 대한 폭넓은 지식을 일반 대중들에게 알리는 것과, 국문을 읽고 쓰는 기초적 문식력의 개발에 있었다. 개화기에는 아직까지 언어규범이 정비되지 않았기 때문에 문체나, 맞춤법 등이 교과서마다 달랐으며, 민족의식을 고취하는 내용이 많이 등장하고 있다. 무엇보다 개화기 국어교과서를 통하여 국문이 공식적으로 사용되기 시작하였다.

This study aims at clarifying the educational value of Korean texts in flowering time of Korea. The national language became an important communicative means driving in flowering time of korea. From that period, the education on the national language began and the text of Korean was developed variously. The most important aims of the Korean texts are to enlighten Korean, to inform the knowledge on wide western civilization to Korean and to develop ability of basic literacy of Korean, especially, Reading and Writing. Due to standard norm being in stabilized at that period, style and orthography was different from each other. And the content was focus mainly on the national consciousness. National language, above all things, began to use formally official documents.
