본고에서는 `□->허-` 변화의 원인과 분포의 양상을 중심으로 논의를 전개하여, `□->허-` 변화 원인을 `ㅓ`의 후설화로 간주하였고 그 변화형이 전북지역을 중심으로 한 서쪽 해안지역에 집중적으로 분포되어 있음을 확인하였다. 19세기 이후에 나타나는 `□->허-` 변화를 `ㅓ`의 후설화에 의해 일어난 것으로 보는 이유는 `□-`(爲)와 `하-`(多)의 의미 대립 관계 때문이다. 이러한 대립관계로 인해 `□-`는 `ㆍ`를 오랫동안 유지하게 되었고, 결국 이 시기에 일어난 모음체계 내의 `ㅓ` 후설화에 의해 `허-`로 변화하게 된다. 문헌 자료에서 `□->하-` 변화가 `□->허-` 변화보다 많이 나타나기는 하지만 이는 `□->하-`와 `□->허-`가 별개의 규칙으로 `□-`에 적용된 것을 의미한다. `□-`에 `ㆍ>ㅏ`가 적용되어 `□->하-`를 보이는 예도 있지만 `하-`(多)가 어휘 체계에서 존재했던 시기에 이와 변별되었던 `□-`(爲)가 `ㅓ`의 후설화로 `허-`로 변화하는 것이다. 현대국어에서 `□->허-`형의 분포를 계량화하여 `□->허-`의 개신지는 전북지역이고, 그 개신의 방향은 서쪽 해안지역으로 퍼져 나갔음을 알 수 있었다.

The purpose of this thesis is to inquire into the cause of the change of the verbstem, `h∧->h∂-` and also into its distribution aspect. The cause is retraction of `∂`, and its varied form is distributed over the west coastal districts, focused on the Jeonpuk districts. Due to the opposing relationship of `h∧-`(爲) and `ha-`(多) in their lexical meaning, `h∧-` holds the `∧` for a long time. And then, by way of the retraction of `∂` which occurred within the vowel system after 19th century, `h∧-` is changed into `h∂-`. `∧>a` applies to `h∧-`, and then `h∧-` is changed into `ha-`. With `ha-`(多) disappeared in the lexical system, `h∧-`(爲) is changed into `h∂-` owing to the retraction of `∂`. `h∧->ha-` is more frequent than `h∧->h∂-` in the research materials. It means that `h∧->ha-` and `h∧->h∂-` apply to `h∧-` separately. In view of the statical analysis of the realization frequency of the rule in modern Korean language, it is clear that the originating place of `h∧->h∂-` is the Jeonpuk district, and that it spreads to the west coastal districts.
