1929년 문광서림(文光書林)에서는 이익(李瀷)의 『성호사설(星湖僿說)』을 출간하였는데, 출간에 붙는 서문이 변영만과 정인보에 의해 작성되었다. 정인보는『성호선생문집』에서 누락된 『성호사설』을 몇 이본들과 대조하여 결락과 오류들을 바로잡아 교간본(校刊本)을 간행하려는 뜻을 갖고 있다가, 마침 문광서림 주인 홍익표(洪翼杓)의 동의를 얻어 반년간 공을 들인 끝에 간행하게 되었으며, 『곽우록(藿憂錄)』을 추가하게 된 것도 자신의 의견임을 신문 칼럼에서 말한 바 있다. 이 1929년 문광서림판 『성호사설』의 서문을 통해 드러나는 변영만과 정인보 두사람의 공통점과 차이점을 추적해보고, 그 의미를 탐색해보려 한다. 위당 정인보(爲堂 鄭寅普)와 산강 변영만(山康 卞榮晩)은 20세기 전반 근대 서울의 한문학 대가로서 쌍벽을 이루고 있던 분들로 꼽히고 있다. `민족의 얼`을 내세우며 국수(國粹)를 탐구하여 국학고전을 학적 영역으로 확보한 이가 정인보였다면, `자득의 경지`를 강조하며 도덕적 문장관으로부터 한문학을 쇄신하여 문예적 진정성을 추구한 이가 변영만이었던 것이다. 그러니 그들이 구문명을 성찰하는 방식과 제시하는 시대적 요구는 당연히 동일할 수가 없었던 것임을 짐작해볼 수 있다.

In 1929, the publishing company Munkwang-seolim published Yi ik`s Seonghosaseol, that book had two prefaces by two modern Sino-Korean literary men, Jeong In-bo and Byeon young-man. My paper is a comparative study of these prefaces. Jeong and Byeon were great scholars of Sino-Korean literature in mdern Seoul Korea. But two person had very different points of view. Byeon thought that the most important point in literature was self- acquirement. He maintained that, to write the best composition, every writer should acquire his own words pulled up from the inner world, and only this writing became a model of literature. From the view-point of literary impression, if a writer is faithful to his own circumstances, he can write a true composition and it can give universal impression to its readers. On the other hand, Jeong was a ultranationalist. He emphasized the national soul, and investigated national ethos. Accordingly, there was very clear distinction between two prefaces by two men. Their attitudes toward Sino-Korean literature of old civilization, and their request for Korean style of new civilization were not in agreement.
