본 연구는 다문화 가정 아동의 한국어 문어 능력 향상을 위한 교재 개발 방안과 아울러 단원 모형 제시를 목표로 하였다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 문어 능력 향상을 위한 문식력과 이해력을 강조하는 통합 교육 방법으로 균형적 접근법을 소개하며 균형적 접근법에 기초한 교재 개발 방안과 함께 교재 모형을 제시하였다. 연구자는 다문화 가정 아동들에게 정규 학교 교육으로 가기 전에 음운 인식과 글 이해를 향상시키는 `whole-part-whole`에 기초한 균형적 읽기 교육을 제공해야 함을 주장하였는데 균형적 읽기 교육은 첫 단계로 `whole 1` 즉 이야기 중심의 읽기 활동에서 읽기 기능과 문자에 대한 노출을 시도하고, 이어서 `part`로 의미 속에서 음운적 자질 노출을 극대화하여 시각 단어 인식과 음운 인식을 교육하며, 마지막 단계인 `whole 2`에서는 의미 이해를 위한 읽기 활동으로 의미 이해와 함께 어휘·구문 확장과 의미 확장을 시도하는 교육 방안이다. 본고에서는 이를 활용한 교재 개발 방안을 제시하였고 교재 단원 모형도 제시하였다.

The purpose of this study is to develop materials to improve Korean literal language ability of multi-cultural children. This study introduced the balanced approach that enhances literacy and reading comprehension as integrated approach to improve literal language ability. This study claimed to provide balanced reading program based on the `whole-part-whole` steps of balanced approach to multi-cultural children prior to their regular school year. Three steps of balanced reading program are whole, part, and another whole: In Whole 1, children are exposed to what reading is and the letter system by storytelling. It includes story introduction by brainstorming, story reading, story review, and story retelling.; in Part, children are taught sight words and phonemic awareness by intended wide exposure to various phonemic traits. It includes correspondence between sound and letter, phonemic awareness, reading books pointing the words, introduction of sight words, syntactic awareness, and spelling.; and finally, in Whole 2, children read, comprehend, and expand stories with new vocabulary and expression. It includes story introduction, story reading, story retelling, story comprehension, syntactic awareness, and story expansion and writing. The study demonstrated the whole syllabus and showed a lesson sample with teaching methodologies based on the balanced approach.
