한국 불교는 선불교로서의 성격을 지향해 왔고 선불교는 언어에 의지하는 알음알이를 경계하는 기본 입장을 지니고 있다는 점에서 한국 불교의 언어관은 언어에 대한 소극적인 기대를 하는 것으로 나타난다. 그러면서도 화두(話頭)와 같은 깨달음에 이르는 방편으로서의 언어를 경시하는 것은 아니고, 실제로 법어(法語)라는 형식의 설법이 이루어지고 있다는 점에서 언어에 대한 경계와 조심스러운 활용이 공존하고 있다고 평가할 수 있다. 논자는 한국 불교가 주로 의지하는 소의경전을 강원의 교재를 중심으로 살펴본 후에, 그 중심을 차지하고 있는 지눌의 대표적인 저서를 중심으로 하여 한국 불교의 언어관이 지니는 특성을 다음과 같은 두 가지로 규정하고자 했다. 하나는 깨달음에 이르는 이정표로서의 말과 글이고 다른 하나는 말 자체에 의지하는 깨침의 지향인데, 전자는 화두를 염두에 둔 것이고 후자는 법어를 염두에 둔 것이다. 이 두 가지 특성 모두 지눌에서 비롯되어 현재에 이루고 있는 살아있는 전통이다. 이 둘을 합하면 결국 소통과 구도의 언어라는 말로 요약될 수 있다. 이러한 한국 불교의 언어관이 현재 우리의 언어예절에서 지닐 수 있는 의미는 먼저 지정한 소통을 추구하는 언어사용이라는 점에서 부각될 수 있다. 진심을 담고 있을 뿐만 아니라 담화의 당사자가 모두 자신의 삶의 의미를 담고서 주고 받는 말은 그 자체로 언어예절의 근간을 이룬다. 그러나 구도를 지향하는 한구 불교의 언어관은 일상적인 언어예절을 넘어서는 할의 전통을 갖고 있기도 해서 현대 시민사회의 언어예절과 일정하게 충돌할 수 있는 가능성도 배제할 수 없다. 이런 점들은 고려하여 우리 사회의 언어예절이 어떤 지향점을 지녀야 하는지를 모색하는 준거를 한국 불교의 언어관에서 찾을 수 있다는 것이 이 작은 논의의 결론이다.

This paper is focusing on the perspective of language of Korean Buddhism and language proprieties. I tried to find the special features of Korean Buddhist language focusing on Canon of Korean Buddhism. Korean Buddhism is good model of Zen Buddhism of East Asia, but its points are not limited to Zen. Korean Buddhism is a unified Buddhism of Zen and other forms of Buddhism, justy its point is to Zen[禪]. The traits of Korean Buddhist language are means of communication and securing to Dharma. Language is a means of communication at the community of Sangha and general society. and it is also a means of securing Dharma. It is important point of the language propriety of Korea that accord of behavior and language, and Korean Buddhist language can be a good reference of that accord. But it has contained to possibilities of clash at common language proprieties, in that Korean Buddhist language allow of strong attack to others. So we are to reflect upon that clash point and to reconstruction of new Korean language proprieties.
