현행 "표준 화법"이 만들어진지 17년이 지났고 그간 우리 사회, 문화 등에 많은 변화가 있었다. 이 연구에서는 현행 "표준 화법"에 제시된 호칭어·지칭어의 문제점을 분석한 뒤 향후 `표준 화법`의 호칭어·지칭어를 재선하기 위하여 고려해야 할 점을 탐색해 보았다. 이 연구에서 `표준 화법`에 제시된 호칭어·지칭어 사용의 적절성 정도를 652명을 대상으로 조사해 본 결과 일부 호칭어·지칭어는 현재 언중들의 언어생활에 비추어 적절하지 못하다는 결과가 나왔다. 또한 `표준 화법`에는 없지만 일상적으로 많이 쓰이는 호칭어·지칭어 중 일부를 다수의 피조사자들이 적절한 표현으로 인식하는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구에서는 현행 `표준 화법`의 호칭·지칭어 규범이 안고 문제점을 해결하기 위하여 다음과 같은 점이 개선되어야 함을 제안하였다. 첫째, 호칭이나 지칭에 널리 사용되는 비표준어 문제를 해결해야 한다. 둘째, 발화자의 상황 특성 구분을 세밀하게 하여야 한다. 셋째, 말을 듣는 상대방의 연령을 제대로 반영하여야 한다. 넷째, 시대의 변화에 따른 사회·문화적인 인식의 변화를 충분히 담아야 한다. 다섯째, 전통적으로 사용했던 표현이라고 해서 다 적절하다고 할 수는 없다는 점을 인식하여야 한다. 여섯째, 새롭게 생긴 호칭·지칭어 중 언중들에게 설득력이 있는 것을 반영하여야 한다. 이 밖에 호칭어·지칭어 표현의 자연스러움과 경제성에 대하여 고려하지 못한 부분이 있다는 점 또한 개선되어야 한다.

This study reviewed the appropriateness of the terms of address and reference usage and showed some of the terms of address and reference were not appropriate for the language life of the population. Besides, some expressions, which are not included in the standard speech but commonly used in the every day life were regarded as appropriate by many participants in the survey. In order to solve the problems with terms of address and reference in the current standard speech, this study suggested the following improvements; First, we must solve the issues of nonstandard expressions commonly used for calling or indicating a person. Second, a fine discrimination should be made for the situation of the caller or indicator. Third, the age of the listener should be included. Fourth, improvements should involve the changes of social and cultural. Fifth, we must acknowledge that not all the traditional expressions are appropriate. Six, among the new terms of address and reference, some expressions that are generally admitted by the population need to be accepted. More over, considerations should be made for naturality and economicality of the terms of address and reference expressions.
