이 연구에서는 `인사말` 사용의 실태를 파악하기 위해 10~20대 180명을 대상으로 앙케이트 조사를 실시하였다. 그 결과 연구 대상자들은 일상생활에서 가족과 같이 가까운 관계의 사람들에게 인사말을 자주 사용하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 가정 안에서 부부 간의 인사말 사용이 미미하다는 지적이 있는데, 이것은 다음 세대의 인사말 사용에까지 영향을 미치고 있는 것으로 보인다. 이러한 현상은 젊은 세대들이 자신의 일 외에 다른 사람에 대한 관심을 보이지 않는 개인주의적 경향과 맞물려 올바른 인사말을 사용했느냐를 따지기 전에 인사말 사용자체의 무재를 초래하고 있다. 연구 대상인 젊은 세대들의 `인사말` 표현에서 다음과 같은 사용 양상이 드러났다. 첫째, 인사말의 격식체보다는 비격식의 두루높임(해요체)를 선호하는 경향이 있다. 둘째, 명령형의 인사말을 사용하는 경향이 있다. 셋째, 외국어나 전자 통신 언어의 사용에서 비롯된 인사말을 사용하는 경향이 있다. 대화상에서 진행되는 구두 언어 표현으로서 `인사말`은 `시작하는 말, 받는 말, 비언어적 행동`의 세 가지 모두가 포함된 형식으로 제시되어야 실제 국어생활에 좀 더 효과적으로 사용될 수 있다. 또 한편에서는 오프라인의 대면 상황에서의 인사말뿐 아니라, 온라인 상황, 전화, 편지글 등 매체에 따라 달리 사용되는 인사말도 각각의 특성을 고려하여 다듬어 나가야 하겠다. 앞으로 `인사말`의 표준을 정하는 작업에는 각계각층의 충분한 사회적인 합의와 심도있는 학문적 연구가 뒷받침되어야 할 것이며, `인사말`의 표준을 정하고 언중들에게 널리 알리기 위해서는 학계와 언론계, 그리고 정부 차원의 협력이 필요하다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the current condition and propose the improvement of standardized of greeting expressions of the Korean spoken language. In order to get the actual condition of greeting expressions of the Korean spoken language, a questionnaire was asked to the younger generation about their daily expressions of greeting. In addition I researched preceding studies were carried out. This study revealed some interesting results of Korea`s younger generation greeting expression. Most of all the notable finding was that they didn`t often use greeting expressions in their daily life. They prefer informal to formal expressions of greeting. They prefer the imperative expression when they said `hello`. And they frequently used greeting expressions from the English language or the internet communications language. The standardization of greeting expressions of Korean spoken language should be included all three organic expressions, `Initiate`, `Response`, these ate verbal language, and `Nonverbal language`. And we should refined the standardization of greeting expressions on-line as well as off-line. Furthermore, the other greeting expressions of types of conversations should be studied.
