1990년10월부터 1991년12월까지 국립국어원과 조선일보사가 공동기획으로 벌인 화법 표준화 사업이 27개 주제를 대상으로 이루어진 사실은 매우 뜻이 깊다. 표준화법을 결정할 때 겸용의 예와 허용의 예를 인정한 것은 매우 긍정적이다. 그러나 아직도 몇 가지 되새겨 봐야 할 부분이 없지 않다. 가령, `자기`라는 부부 간의 호칭어 지칭어의 배제는 재론할 여지가 있고, `압존법`이 오늘날 엄격한 틀에서 벗어나고 있으므로 권위주의의 상징인 압존법을 종전과 같이 강조할 필요는 없다. `옛사람의 가르침`과 `고운말 쓰기` 장려로 이어가면 표준화법이 실질적 발전을 도모할 수 있을 것이다.

It holds great significance for the National Institute of Korean Language(NIKL) and Chosun Newspaper Company to take the joint initiative to launch the speech standardization projects encompassing twenty seven themes which are completed in the period of the October of 1990 and the December of 1991. One of the most desirable aspect of the standard would be the inclusion of the Gyom-Yong and Huh-yong in its standard. Yet, several aspects of the standard still need to be put under further scrutiny. For example, we need to reconsider the exclusion of the word "Jaa-Ghi" referring to one`s spouse in the standard use of Jee-Ching. Also, not as much emphasis on following Aap-Jon-Bup as in the standard need be insisted since Aap-Jon-Bup is no longer followed strictly in recent time and it only symbolizes the old authoritarian tradition. We propose that the promotion for the use of "Go-Eun-Maal" and adherence to the old traditional teachings would facilitate the practical improvement of the speech standard.
