이 연구는 우리나라의 다문화 교육에 관한 연구 경향을 살펴보고 향후 과제를 반성적으로 검토한 것이다. 다문화 교육에 관한 연구가 본격적으로 시작된 것은 2006년부터로 이후 각종 학회나 단체 및 정부 기관의 연구 활동도 증가하고 있다. 그렇지만 다문화 교육 연구가 중등보다 초등과 유치원 교육에서 활발하며, 그 초점도 학교에서의 다문화 교육 실태나 내용, 방법 및 교사의 인식 등에 맞추어져 있다. 향후 연구에서 진지하게 고려할 사항이나 과제로 다음과 같은 것을 들 수 있다. 첫째, 다문화 교육 실태연구 대상의 확대와 심층적 접근이 필요하다. 둘째, 새터민에 대한 다문화 교육 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다. 셋째, 다문화 교육 프로그램의 효과를 검증하는 연구가 필요하다. 넷째, 다문화 교육 대상자들의 요구나 원망을 파악할 필요가 있다. 다섯째, 일부 교과 중심의 다문화 교육 연구에서 탈피하여야 할 것이다. 여섯째, 이중 언어교육 프로그램의 개발 연구가 필요하다. 일곱째, 우리 상황에 적합한 다문화 교육의 의미를 규정할 필요가 있다.
The purpose of this study is to examine research trends of multicultural education in Korea and suggest some directions and tasks for further study. For this purpose, I reviewed abundant research resources in the multicultural education area which were published during 1995-2009. The study of multicultural education has been increased rapidly from 2006 in Korea. However, most of studies were initiated by researchers who worked in subject matter rather than educationist. Furthermore, many meanings of multicultural education were limited as an assimilation or adjustment of foreigners. Also, many studies for multicultural education were focused mostly on the realities, contents, methods, and perceptions of teachers. With these research trends of multicultural education, I`d like to suggest some directions and tasks for the further study. First, the target of multicultural education should be aimed at not only foreign students, but also Korean students. Second, it is also need to establish multicultural education system for students who escaped from North Korea. Third, it should examine the effect of diverse programs of the multicultural education. Fourth, multicultural education researchers should have more concerns for the need or requisition of students and parents. Fifth, it is necessary to break from the some subject matter-centered research trend. Sixth, it needs development of bilingual education program. Finally, it is necessary to define the meaning of multicultural education relevant to the Korean society.
