이 논문은 서북지역 여성의 지역성을 밝히고자 서북지역의 관비와 열녀에 대한 기록을 검토한 것이다. 이 논문의 근간을 이루는 것은 두 가지 사건이다. 첫째는 1583년(宣祖16)에 일어난 이른바 ‘옥비(玉婢)의 란(亂)’이다. 이 사건을 통해 서북지역 관비의 쇄환이 체제 유지와 밀접한 관련이 있다는 사실을 확인하였다. 아울러 사료에 나타나는 서북지역 관비에 대한 기록을 검토함으로써 관비에 대한 신분적, 제도적 구속을 살피고, 관비의 이탈과 축첩이 남성관료의 축첩욕구와 관기의 신분상승욕구가 결합한 결과임을 확인하였다. 서북지역은 관비에 대한 체제의 억압이 더욱 뚜렷이 드러나는 곳으로, 관비의 이탈과 축첩은 신분제도와 국가운영의 구조적 측면에서 이해되어야 한다. 둘째는 1734년(英祖10)에 발생한 남병사(南兵使) 이의풍(李義?) 피습 사건이다. 이 사건에 대한 중앙문인과 지역문인의 상이한 시선은 서북지역 여성을 입전한 열녀전에서도 드러난다. 성리학적 이념을 추종하는 지역문인이 묘사한 서북지역의 열녀는 이념적 산물로 포장된 보편적 여성상이다. 하지만 중앙문인이 묘사한 서북지역의 열녀는 성리학적 이념의 보급이 늦었던 지역사회의 실상을 그대로 보여준다. 이들이 묘사한 서북지역 여성의 열행은 여성에게 부과된 이념적 의무에서 비롯된 것이 아니라 인간이 인간을 위한 의리에서 비롯된 자발적 행위에 가깝다. 이러한 열행은 지역사와 지역문화적 특성을 고려할 때 서북지역 여성의 지역성을 보여주는 사례로 간주할 수 있다.

This thesis examines the historical materials and literary works about female slaves and virtuous women in the northern region to investigate the locality of women in the northern region. Focus of this thesis is put on 2 incidents. The first one is agitation of Okbi(玉婢) in 1583. It was confirmed that compulsory repatriation of female slaves in the northern region was closely related to maintenance of power system in the region. And it was also confirmed that protest of female slaves and concubinage were the result of the desire of male officials for having concubines and the desire of female slaves for ascension of their social status. In the northern region, institutional constraints on female slaves were clearly shown, so protest of female slaves and concubinage should be understood in the aspect of the social system and management of the state. The second one is the attack of Lee, Ui Pung(李義?), a provincial military commander of the northern region in 1734. Different opinions about the attack between central literati and local literati were revealed in the `Stories of Virtuous Women`. The image of virtuous women in the northern region described by local literati was a common image of women which was a product of the ideology. However, image of virtuous women described by central literati was rather voluntary actions caused by loyalty of a human towards other human than actions caused by ideological obligations imposed on women. Such virtuous actions can be regarded as an example of locality of women in the northern region when they are considered in the light of history and cultural characteristics of the region.
