플롯은 보편적이고 가치중립적인 것으로 보이지만 실은 서사가 담고자 하는 이데올로기를 전달하는 장치이다. 따라서 누구의 서사이며 어떤 이데올로기를 담는가에 따라 플롯은 달라진다. 이 글에서는 플롯을 성적 위계나 성적 억압의 구조를 가능하게 하는 성장치(gender-sexuality appratus)로 본다. 성장치는 서사의 플롯이 구성, 재구성되면서 성적 이데올로기가 작동되는 방식을 보여주기에 유용한 개념이다. 성장치의 개념으로 전기소설의 서사를 분석한 결과 <최치원>은 ‘구원받아야 하는 여성, 구원하는 남성의 서사’, <이생규장전>은 ‘소극적인/달아나는 남성, 적극적인/희생하는 여성의 서사’, 그리고 <주생전>은 ‘사랑이라는 폭력의 서사’를 구현하는 플롯으로 이루어져 있음을 밝혔다. 남성 욕망을 정당화하는 이러한 플롯은 연애서사의 한 전형으로 나말 여초로부터 조선후기까지도 계속 재생산되었다. 그럼에도 전기소설에서 그려지는 사랑은 예교에 대한 도전의 의미로서 의미가 있는 것으로 평가되어 왔다. 이 글은 그간 전기소설 연구가 남성 중심적 연애 이데올로기가 드러나지 않은 채 고독감이나 비극성의 측면을 강조하여 미적 특질이 작품에 내재하는 것 이상으로 평가되었다고 본다. 그리고 이러한 평가는 가부장제적 쾌락을 생산해 내는 플롯을 미적 가치를 지닌 것이라고 판단하는 인식에서 비롯되며, 전기소설의 미학도 이러한 인식을 기반으로 구축되었다고 본다. 여성주의 문학 연구는 남성들의 텍스트를 대상으로 한 기존의 이론이나 미학의 전제에 대해 계속 질문해 왔다. 이러한 질문들은 남성들의 문학을 중심 또는 보편의 위치에 두는 전제에 대한 도전이자 문학 연구의 남성 중심성에 대한 비판이기도 하다. 이 연구도 그러한 질문 중의 하나로 플롯 자체가 젠더화되어 있다는 점, 그것이 여성/남성 주체를 형성하는 성장치로 작동해 왔다는 점, 그러나 그것이 드러나지 않았던 것은 문학연구의 남성 중심성에 기인한다는 점을 지적하고자 한 것이다.

This study tries to show plot functions as an apparatus which conveys an ideology in narrative although it seems to be universal and neutral. Considered from gender perspective, plot is a gender-sexuality apparatus which supports the sexual hierarchy and sexual oppression. The concept of gender-sexuality apparatus is useful to reveal the way how gender ideology works by the construction and reconstruction of plot. After analyzing the plot of Cheongi-soseol, representative love stories in Choseon dynasty, these are found: The Life of Choechiwon(崔致遠) shows the kind of narrative where a woman was characterized as one-to-be-saved and a man as one-to-save. In The Life of Peeping Lee-Saeng(李生窺墻傳) the narrative of ‘a passive/escaping man and an active/sacrificing woman’ is seen. The Life of Jusaeng周生傳 is consisted of the narrative of sexual violence which was done in the name of love. Through this analysis it is clear that the plot which justifies men`s desire is the typical plot of love stories which had been produced and reproduced from late Shilla and early Korea to late Choseon. In spite of this, previous studies on Cheongi-soseol have tried to emphasize heroes` solitude and the tragic aspect of their life and put the value of the aesthetic based on that, ignoring the men-centered ideology in the narrative of Cheongi-soseol. This study attempts to question this kind of tendency and tries to show the plot of Cheongi-soseol is gendered and functions as an apparatus which constructs the male and female subjects. In this aspect, this study is in the line of feminist literary studies which raise questions of the grounds of literary theories and studies by gender perspective.
