이 연구의 목적은 국어수업의 장에서 지배적으로 생산되는 어린이의 `행위지향적 표현`의 생산과 수용 과정을 맥락화하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 연구자는 2009년 3월에서 2010년 2월에 걸쳐 경기도 부천시 소재의 한 초등학교 3학년 교실에서 참여관찰을 수행하였다. 분석을 위해 선택된 자료는, 중요한 사회문제이자 교과서 주제지식이기도 한 `질병과 장애`를 다룬 행위지향적 표현이다. 어린이의 행위지향적 표현은 그들이 추구하는 가치를 중심으로 그것의 사회적 실현을 위해 자신이 구체적으로 실천할 세부 행동들로 구성된다. 그러므로 이러한 표현은 생성의 순간부터 실천에 대한 의지를 담고 있으며, 자신과 타인을 향한 약속의 어조를 띤다. 그러나 어린이들은 자신의 말이나 글에 견주어 대치되는 행동들을 보임으로써 그들의 행위지향적 표현은 그 진실성 측면에서 의문을 갖게 만들었다. 이러한 기형적인 행위지향적 표현의 생산과 수용의 맥락이 만들어진 원인은, `질병과 장애`라는 주제를 예로 살펴볼 경우, 국어수업의 장에서 공유되는 장애인에 대한 부정확한 이미지, 이를 토대로 수행되는 어린이들의 말하기와 글쓰기 행위, 나의 언어에 대한 반성 없이 습관적으로 같은 언어수행이 반복되는 국어수업의 기제, 그리고 이에 대한 무자각 등을 찾아낼 수 있었다. 자신의 말과 글, 행위가 갖는 상관성에 대해 자각할 필요가 있다. 이는 나의 언어가 대사회적으로 지녀야 할 책임, 즉 표현에 앞서 표현에 담겨야 할 근본적인 철학이다.

The study aims to contextualize the production of "action-oriented words" by children in elementary Korean language class. I conducted field work in a 3rd grade classroom from March 2009 to January 2010. I focused specifically on children`s action-oriented words dealing with disease, illness, and disability. Children`s action-oriented words are words which rouse or otherwise compel them to behave according to moral values. Children, however, are not consciously aware of how words influence their behavior. Children parrot without thinking words they are instructed to speak. They easily confuse fantastical descriptions of events in fiction with reality. Children develop unrealistic representations of disabled people. I conclude that children should be explicitly instructed to think about the relationship between their words and behavior.
