민요는 우리 시가문학의 근간이 되는 장르로서 국문학적으로는 물론 문학교육적으로도 중요하게 다루어질 필요가 있다. 문학교육의 목표가 문학을 생활화함으로써 인간답고 풍부한 삶을 영위하는 데 있다는 것에 비추어 본다면, 민요야말로 문학의 생활화를 위한 가장 유용한 장르라 할 수 있기 때문이다. 그러나 문학교육의 현실에서 민요가 차지하고 있는 자리는 그다지 넓지 않다. 민요는 주로 문학사적 지식으로서 가르쳐지거나, 다른 장르에 대한 보조적인 설명자료로서 활용되고 있으며, 민요가 국어교과서나 문학교과서에서 다루어지는 양 역시 다른 장르에 비해 매우 부족하다. 이는 단지 민요에 대한 국문학적인 연구의 부족에만 원인이 있는 것이 아니라, 민요를 통해 학습자가 무엇을 경험할 수 있는지, 그러한 경험이 학습자의 성장에 어떤 도움을 줄 수 있는지에 대한 문학교육적 관점에서의 연구가 그동안 제대로 시도되지 않았기 때문이라 볼 수 있다. 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 본고는 민요의 향유자들이 민요를 통해 자신의 삶을 어떻게 인식하고 이에 대응했는가를 병렬과 풍자의 형식을 통해 확인해 보고자 하였다. 그 결과 민요의 특징으로서의 병렬과 풍자는 곧 상대적 인식과 웃음을 추구하는 삶으로 이어진다는 것을 이해할 수 있었다. 이를 근거로 할 때 오늘날의 학습지들에게 민요 역시 자기 삶의 건강성을 확보하는 수단으로서 적극적으로 향유될 가능성이 있다고 말할 수 있으며, 이것이 민요교육의 중요한 요소로서 고려되어야 한다고 생각한다.
Fork Song is the basis of poetry. So it has significant meaning in the study of literature and literary education. As literary education aims to make the leaners to enjoy literature a way of life, fork song is the nearest genre which can be a way of life. But in the real area of literary education, fork song has not been dealt with so. It has been taught as a knowledge, which is a part of the history of literature, and the number of fork songs which is included in the textbook is remarkably fewer than the other genres. The lack of research on fork song can be the reason why fork song gets an unkind treatment in the literary education. But I think that it is the fundamental reason that only few researcher interested in the influence of enjoying fork song, especially to the contemporary people. So I tried to clarify the experience of the people who enjoyed fork song; how they recognized their life and reacted about the world in singing fork song. Especially I attended two elements in the fork song; parallelism and satire. I think that parallel enabled the relative recognition, and satire draw laugh to the people. And through these ways they could overcome the difficulties of their lives. In conclusion, I think that today`s people also can enjoy the usefulness of fork song, and it should be the aim of fork song education.
