사회가 변화하면서 우리 사회의 구성원들의 소통 영역과 방식이 크게 변화하였다. 대표적인 예로, 전통 사회에서 관습적으로 사용하던 인사말, 호칭어·지칭어 등이 어색하거나 더 이상 쓸 수 없다고 느끼는 경우가 많아졌다. 현재 우리 사회에 많은 구성원들이 일상 화법에서 어려움을 겪은 경험이 있고, 또 인사말이나 호칭 등에서 기분이 상한 경험이 있다는 설문 조사 결과로 미루어 볼 때, 국어 표준 화법을 정비하는 것은 이제 우리의 중요한 과제가 되었다. 이 연구는 1992년 발간된 `표준 화법 해설’에서 제시한 인사말, 호칭어·지칭어, 경어법의 실제 사용 양상이 그 동안 얼마나 달라졌으며, 이들 영역에 대한 국민들의 인식이 어떠한지를 조사하기 위한 연구의 일부이다. 그 가운데, 가정에서의 호칭어·지칭어에 대한 결과를 따로 정리하였다. 이 연구의 결과, 그때에 비해 가정 내 호칭어·지칭어가 여러 부분에서 사용 양상이 달라졌다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 특히, 20대 젊은 층일수록 혼란을 느끼는 정도가 심하게 나타났다. 실제 화법에서 상황 맥락의 도움을 받아 의사소통에는 크게 문제되지는 않지만, 화자나 청자가 이들 영역에서 어려움을 느끼거나 불편함을 느끼는 경우를 모두 고려하면 혼란스러운 경우는 훨씬 더 많을 것이다. 국민들의 요구를 수용하고, 국민 언어생활의 가장 비중이 큰 듣기와 말하기 생활의 편의성을 도모하기 위해서 국가 차원의 전국적 화법 실태와 인식 조사를 바탕으로 `21세기 한국 현대 표준 화법’규정을 만들고, 각 급 학교와 방송 등 공공 기관을 통해서 체계적으로 그 내용을 가르치고, 홍보 하는 것이 필요하다.

The purpose of this research is to investigate contemporary discourse within Korean society with the view of providing sufficient evidence and material for a review of the Standard of Korean Discourse(1992). So we need to investigate on the Standard if there have been significant changes in spoken language and the consciousness of Korean people about spoken language. Especially, this research is about calling the other side in the family. A survey of 1,100 people in Seoul City, Incheon City, and Kyounggi province was conducted by written questionnaire on the three critical areas and the level of awareness of the Standard followed by in-depth interviews of a few respondents. The results clearly indicate that since 1992 spoken discourse in Korean society has considerably changed. These findings suggest that the current Standard of Discourse does not reflect contemporary discourse. We suggest that further research on spoken discourse be conducted nationwide, and that findings be employed to improve on the existing Standard of Discourse to better reflect the public`s use of spoken Korean.
