이 연구는 수도권 지역에 거주하는 성인을 대상으로 직장, 사회에서의 호칭·지칭어 사용 실태를 조사하여 기존 `표준 화법’의 개선을 위한 기초 자료를 마련하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이번 연구에서 조사대상으로 삼은 것은 `국어의 표준 화법(1992)’에서 권장되었으나 거의 쓰이지 않는 표현, 언급되지 않았으나 매우 활발하게 쓰이는 표현, 쓰임에 많은 변화가 있을 것으로 보이는 표현 등 아홉 가지로 제한하였다. 20대 이상 946명(남성 363명, 여성 583명)이 설문 조사에 참여하였으며, 세대와 성별을 연구의 주요 변인으로 설정하였다. 수집된 자료를 교차 분석과 카이스퀘어 검정을 통해 호칭·지칭어의 사용 양상과 집단별 차이를 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 기존 `표준 화법`에서 권고한 것과 차이가 나는 것, 세대별로 차이가 나는 것, 성별로 차이가 나는 것 등이 밝혀졌다. 이와 더불어 연구 결과를 토대로 다음과 같은 제안을 하였다. ① `표준 화법 해설(1992)’과 달리 널리 사용되는 호칭·지칭어를 재평가해야 한다. ② `표준 화법 해설(1992)’에서 권장하였으나 빈도가 낮은 표현을 재평가해야 한다. ③ 사회·직장의 다양한 의사소통 상황별 호칭·지칭어의 조사와 표준화가 필요하다. ④ 세대별로 선호하는 호칭·지칭어를 고려하여 표준 화법을 제시하여야 한다. ⑤ 성별로 선호하는 호칭·지칭어를 고려하여 표준 화법을 제시하여야 한다.

The purpose of this study was to examine the use of address terms and reference terms in official and social situations. The focus of this study was on the methods of improving Standard Speech(National Institute of the Korean Language, NIKL, 1992), examining the manner in which address terms and reference terms that were not recommended in Standard Speech(NIKL, 1992)are used, and the changes in the use of expressions that may have been caused by social change. A total number of 946 people participated in the survey conducted by us. Descriptive statistics, cross-tabulations, and nonparametric chi-square analysis were used for the analysis of the data. The results revealed that there were changes in the contemporary use of address terms and reference terms in official and social situations since the publication of Standard Speech(NIKL, 1992). The most interesting finding was that there are a number of differences in the `gender` and `generation` variables. In addition to these findings, implications for the improvement of Standard Speech(NIKL, 1992) have been discussed in this paper.
