본 논문은 <서동요>와 <헌화가>를 중심으로 이른바 민요계 향가의 시적 구성 방식을 재검토하고, 이를 바탕으로 두 작품에서 구애라는 시적 발상과 그 표현법을 해명하고자 한 것이다. 표면상 3분절로 드러난 <서동요>는 지금까지 A-B-C-D의 4구로 해독한 것과는 달리, A-B-(A)-C-(A)-D의 선후창의 구성으로 확장하여 이해할 수 있으며, 실제 기사에서는 확장된 내용이 내포적으로 축약되었다고 볼 수 있다. 셋째 분절이 다른 두 분절보다 길어진 것은 여러 구절로 나뉠 수 있는 정보를 내장한 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 전승 문맥 속에 <해가>라는 <구지가>계 노래와 함께 수록된 <헌화가>는 <해가>가 지닌 주술구조를 내장하고 있는 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 4구로 끊어 읽는 가운데 A에는 `乎`, B에는 `放`, C에는 `不`, D에는 `折`을 포함하고 있어서, `호칭`-`명령`-`가정`-`위협`이라는 주술구조가 전환적 표현으로 드러난 것이라 할 수 있다. 그리하여 A-B와 C-D가 다른 대상을 향한 발화로 나타나며, A-B는 대상을 향한 요구나 부탁으로, C-D는 구체적 대사에서 수로부인을 향한 주체의 속내를 드러낸 것으로 볼 수 있다. <서동요>와 <헌화가>는 모두 구애라는 사랑의 표현을 드러내고 있지만, <서동요>는 혼사의 계략을 통한 일방적인 차지하기의 집요함을 보이고 있고, <헌화가>는 마음을 얻기 위한 암시를 드러낸 것으로 볼 수 있다. 차지하기라는 서동의 사랑은 그 이면에 욕망과 결핍이 자리하고 있고, 마음 얻기에 중심이 놓인 노인의 사랑은 자신을 성찰하는 과정과 연결되어 있는 것으로 설명할 수 있다.

The aim of this article is to rethink the poetic composition of the Hyangga of folk song category centering around and , and to explain the poetic ideas and the expressions such as courtship or lovingness. is composed of leader-response pattern, for example, A-B-(A)-C-(A)-D, and the third phrase; lengthened than other two phrase, is keeping serial informations separated into several phrases. is keeping back magic structure of . Magic structure of category is expressed such as A;call(호 칭)-B;order(명령)-C;supposition(가정)-D;threat(위협), and this magic structure is converted into inner attitude of mind especially in . The first and the second phrase is to request to the natural object, and the third and the forth phrase is to disclose speaker`s real intention to the love-object. Two poems reveal expression of courtship or lovingness. The one, is willing to possess the love-object persistently, and the other, is trying to reveal an attitude of acknowledgement. Courtship of Seodong is keeping back a desire and lack, and lovingness of an oldest driving a cow is connected with his own reflection.
