To understand diachronically about Gu Ja-wun`s poetry, we need to have concern for his poetical symbols. He had a keen interest in the poetical symbol. For example he made use of ceramics, cricket, sea, girl. His symbol of ceramics in 1950s` had made by under the influence of traditionalism that had represented by pumping mechanism of Contemporary Literature, and under the compensation for his physical disability. After 4·19 he got out of the traditionalism, and he participated in 1960s` Anthology. Through the symbol of cricket and sea, he sung the political freedom and the existential freedom at that time. In 1960s` his soul was filled with suffering because of poverty. He made a desperate attempt to find the redemption in love with the young girl, Mok-ae, or in conversion into Buddhism. Even though he failed in his attempts, his poetical method of symbol deserve admiration. Because it was the product of his consistent efforts to get the universality over the Korean poetry and oriental poetry. Gu Ja-wun`s posthumous complete-works gave currency to misunderstanding that he had wanted to come back to the oriental vision in his beginning period by discovering unknown poems in his drawer. But, in fact he did not want to return to his oriental poetry. On the contrary he published the new pieces of work on death, the posthumous work had remained in his drawer. The structural meaning of the death-awareness in his later poetry had found in the melancholiac displacement that he had not found the worthy of the present life as long as he had left a matter out of account about the absolute unhappy.
