이 연구에서는 북한과 중국의 경제관계의 구조적 특징과 한반도를 둘러싼 국제 정치경제적 기제 및 중국의 정책 결정요인을 연결시켜 석함으로써 그 동안 제한된 북·중 무역 통계 분석이나 매체의 단편적 보도가 갖는 한계성을 극복하고, 정치경제적 맥락에서 북·중 제관계의 전반적 양상을 전망해 보았다. 북·중 경제관계는 기본적으로 중국의 전략적 동기와 북한의 경제상황에 의해 조율할 수 있는 충분한 공간, 즉 `회색지대`가 존재한다. 2009년 가을 이후 2010년 천안함 사건을 거치면서 중국의 국가 이익 동기가 북·중 경제계를 좌우할 가능성이 더욱 커졌다.

The Chinese government has not released details of China-DPRK trade statistics. Given some special structural features of trade and investment between China and DPRK, seemingly enormous North Korea`s trade deficit with China is not a main constraint for economic exchanges. There exists a vast room for political manipulation for strategic interests of both sides, i.e. a `grey zone`. China`s strategic concern for Korean Peninsula and domestic political motivation are more important factors for China-DPRK economic relationship. Despite North Korea`s reluctance for the six party talks and Cheonan incident, momentum for China-DPRK economic relationship will be sustained.
