This paper examines the meaning of several concepts which were associated with the emergence of the detective story genre in Korea. From pre-modern times, the words `jeongtam` and `tamjeong` were used to indicate a detective`s action, and the former was used much more frequently until the 1910s. `Jeongtam` was subsequently replaced by `tamjeong` when Western detective stories, which started to be published in Korean newspapers and magazines in the early 1920s, reached a wide readership, a circumstance which caused the meaning of the word `tamjeong` to start to point modern investigative methods, based on scientific knowledge and inferences. On the other hand, the detective story titles were often marked as `tamjeong-gi`goe`, in which the term `gi`goe` indicated the mysterious characteristics of a incident which required sophisticated investigation by a detective. Before the detective genre became familiar to Korean readers, the word `gi`goe`, thus, helped readers to understand the characteristics of the genre by indicating the mysterious incident, along with the word `tamjeong`, which meant investigation. However, Korean detective stories produced during the colonial period could not properly illustrate the detective`s investigative procedures. Neither authors nor readers could (re)organize the sophisticated scientific detective procedures involved, since science education and knowledge were very narrow and shallow as a result of colonial education policy. For this reason, rather than presenting a sophisticated detective process, stories placed far greater focus on catchy and sensational material, such as the brutal result of a murder, the appalling bodies of victims, and the abominable characteristics of the criminal. Since detective novels and stories had come to focus primarily on the brutal aspect of crime, the meaning of `gi`goe`, which had formerly carried the sense of `mystery`, changed, and started to indicate the grotesque aspects of a story, a tendency which led to the establishment of a subordinate genre called `goegi`, the grotesque. In this paper, I examine the process of conceptual transformation, and the socio-historical environment which underpinned it.
