김원일은 『노을』과 『불의 제전』, 『늘푸른 소나무』등의 소설을 통해 민족 분단의 비극과 모순을 집요하게 탐색한 작가이다. `거창사건`을 다룬 『겨울골짜기』 또한 분단문학의 범주에 속하는 작품이다. 그런 까닭에 기왕의 연구는 전쟁과 이데올로기, 권력의 폭력성에 초점을 맞추어 주제의식의 측면에서 작품을 논구해 왔다. 그런데 『겨울골짜기』는 1987년에 이 작품이 첫 출간된 이 후 두 차례의 개작이 이루어졌다. 그리고 이러한 개작을 통해 작품의 상당 부분이 삭제되거나 변화되어 기존 연구의 유효성이 재고되고 있는 만큼 무엇보다 작품의 개작 양상에 대한 천착이 시급한 실정이었다. 본고에서는 『겨울골짜기』의 표현 방법과 내용, 그리고 인물 형상에 국한하여 그 개작 양상을 논구하였다. 표현 형식과 내용의 층위에서는 어휘 교체, 통사적 구조 변화, 어휘·구·문장의 삭제, 단락과 내용의 삭제 등으로 세분화하여 각각의 사례들을 중심으로 개작 양상을 살펴보았다. 그리고 인물 형상의 층위에서는 인물의 성격과 관련된 여러 장면과 요소를 제거함으로 파생된 결과를 관념성과 감상성의 탈각, 인물들 간의 관계의 작위성, 인물의 성격 약화라는 측면에서 논구하였다.

Winter Valley(『겨울골짜기』) has been rewritten two times since the novel was first published in 1987. This study analyzes the revisions of Winter Valleyfocusing on two levels: the expressional form and content, and the realizations of the characters. First, at the level of form/content, I narrowed the changes down to specific categories such as vocabulary changes, structural changes to the plot, deletion of words, phrases and sentences, deletion of paragraphs and story content, and then carried out an analysis of those categories. I looked at the replacements used for vocabulary items and wrong words, changes in distances and heights, dialects, word endings and declensions. At the level of word-phrase-sentence, I observed that there were deletions of adverbials, rhetorical expressions, and also of descriptions of characters interacting in the novel, and that a majority of the sentences were changed into more colloquial ones. In the final section of chapter 2, I found that parts of conversations, paragraphs and peripheral incidents divisible into specific meaning units had been deleted. In Chapter 3, I discussed authorial deletions of various scenes related to the personalities of characters, resulting in a drop in the level of idealism and emotion, in the creation of artificiality in the relations between characters, and in weakening the personality of characters. While deletions of many conversations between, and inner descriptions of, characters surrounding the character Kim, Ik-su, resulted in a drop in formerly confluent idealism and emotion elements, the conflicts and communication breakdowns between Kim, Ik-su and Song, the company commander, also appear as more artificial compared to the pre-revision text. Therefore, the study confirmed that the rewriting the conversations and actions of the major and minor characters resulted in the simplification or weakening of characters.
