연암 박지원은 은미한 곳으로부터 이치로 나아가는 글쓰기 방식인 우언을 널리 활용하여 인식의 전환을 꾀하고자 하였다. 그러나 연암 당대에는 『열하일기』의 `희소`와 `노매`, `우언`의 이면에 감추어진 핵심은 간과한 채 단순한 전기(傳奇)나 해소(諧笑)의 작품으로 간주하여 그 대의를 깊이 탐구하지 않은 경우가 많았다. 우언이 『열하일기』의 서술방식으로 널리 활용되었음은 익히 알려진 사실이다. 본고에서는 기존 연구에서 주목하지 않았던 부분들(일기나 필담, 기 등)을 새롭게 조명하면서 『열하일기』의 서술방식으로서 우언이 얼마나 다채롭게 활용되었는가를 살펴보면서 그 의미를 해석하는 데 주안을 두었다. 연암은 우언을 통해 오랑캐라 하더라도 앞선 기술과 문명을 가지고 있다면 그것을 있는 그대로 인정해야 한다는 주장을 펼 수 있었을 뿐 아니라, 사농공상에 대한 기존의 인식이 과연 타당한지, 대명의리에 기초한 북벌론이 현실적으로 타당한 주장인지에 대한 의문을 제기할 수 있었고, 허상이나 관념에 매여 있기보다는 실상과 현실에 기초하여야 한다는 주장을 펼 수도 있었다. 연암은 우언을 통하여 자칫 심각하고 무겁게 펼쳐질 가능성이 컸던 문제들을 무리 없이 재미있으면서도 경쾌하게 펼칠 수 있었을 뿐만 아니라 독자들로 하여금 기존의 통념과 세계관에서 벗어나 현실을 새롭게 인식하고 세계관을 재정립해야 한다는 주장에 동의하게 만들 수 있었다. 연암은 『열하일기』를 서술하면서 우언이 지닌 극적인 효과를 적극 활용하였던 것이다. 『열하일기』의 우언에 대한 연구는 몇몇 소설 작품이나 연암의 상대주의적 인식론이나 세계관을 중심으로 이루어져 오던 연구의 편향성에서 벗어나 『열하일기』의 본령에 대한 연구로 되돌아가는 방법 가운데 하나로서도 의의가 있다.
Park Jiwon tried to change the traditional thinking ways of Choseon(朝鮮), using allegories in Yeolhailgi(熱河日記). But people regarded it as a joke or a funny story, and did not seek the hidden meaning of it. In this paper, I tried to confirm that allegories were used in Yeolhailgi more broad and diversified than we thought, and allegory was a important method of writing Yeolhailgi. Park Jiwon argued to approve the advanced civilization of Ching(淸), even though those are not the civilization of Chinese[Han, 漢] but barbarians[胡]. He brought the social convention on the traditional four class of society(scholars, farmers, artisans and tradesmen) into questions, and criticized the unreality of an insistence to conquer the north based upon the loyalty for the Ming(明). He suggested these arguments through the allegories, and could minimize the confusion or shock in Choseon society. Using allegories, Park Jiwon could expand the serious problems with humor and laugh, and make readers to agree with his arguments. Study on the allegories in Yeolhailgi will be a way to return the proper province of Yeolhailgi research, and will be a way to adjust the biased tendency of studying Yeolhailgi, also.
