지적장애 용어의 사용이 세계적으로 점점 늘어감에 따라 미국지적발달장애(AAIDD)는 과거 10번째 편람까지 사용한 정신지체 용어를 금년 11번째 편람(2010)에서 지적장애 용어를 공식적으로 사용했다. 이러한 변화는 단순한 용어의 변화라기보다는 지적장애의 개념에 대한 철학적, 인식론적 토대에서 나타난 것이다. 이에 본 논문은 미국지적발달장애협회의 11번째 편람(AAIDD, 2010)을 포함해서 여러 단체에서 사용하는 용어가 지적장애란 용어로 이동한 주요 이유에 대해서 알아보고, AAIDD의 11번째 편람에서 지적장애의 정의 및 분류체제의 내용과 그 함의를 알아보고자 했다.

In world, as use of term of intellectual disability than mental retardation is increasing, American Association on Intellectual·Developmental Disability(AAIDD) changed the term "mental retardation" that has used until 10th manual, as "intellectual disability" in 11th manual. This change has so many implications that come in philosophy and epistemology over changing term itself. The purpose of this study is to explain why term of mental retardation shift to intellectual disability that using in several associations for disabilities including AAIDD 11th Manual, and is to reveal implication of definition and classification of intellectual disability in AAIDD 11th.
