최근 들어 인구이동은 도시간 이동이 주류를 이루며 대도시는 주요 유입지와 유출지로 나타난다. 본 논문은 인구이동은 지리적 이동이며 선별적 인구의 사회적 이동임을 고려해 대도시 유입과 유출인구의 이동 방향과 영역 그리고 이들의 사회경제적 속성 비교를 통해 인구이동에서 나타나는 대도시의 역할을 검토하였다. 지리적 측면에서 광범위한 지역에서 인구를 유입하여 한정된 인근 또는 수도권으로 인구를 유출하는 유형, 유입과 유출지역이 유사한 유형, 그리고 인근 지역으로부터 인구를 유입하여 서울을 위시한 수도권으로 인구를 유출하는 유형이 구분된다. 이러한 지리적 이동을 사회적 이동으로 보면 서울은 유출인구에서, 다른 대도시들은 유입인구에서 높은 자가주택 점유율을 보여 주거기능의 역할 차이를 보이며, 취업기능면에서는 서울, 부산, 대구는 고학력, 전문인력이 생산자서비스업에 유입인구가 다수 종사하는 반면 인천, 광주, 대전, 울산은 고등학교 학력의 제조업, 기능·기술직을 다수 유입하여 대도시간 대조적 양상을 보인다. 이는 지리적 인구이동이 선별적 인구집단의 사회적 이동을 반영하는 것으로, 대도시는 취업과 주거 기회를 선별적 유입·유출인구에게 제공하는 역할을 하고 있다. 이주자들은 대도시를 자신들의 필요를 충족시키는 사회적 상승의 기회로 고려하여 지리적 이동을 추구한 것으로 인구이동을 고려해 볼 수 있다.

Recently, migration has occurred more in urban-to-urban in which large cities have been important as origin and destination of the these migrants. This paper explores the migration flows to and from large cities by examining the spatial pattern of geographic movement and comparing the in- and out-migrants` socioeconomic characteristics. The spatial pattern of migration is disclosed in three types: receiving migrants from diverse areas and sending them to a few nearby and the capital area, receiving and sending migrants to and from similar areas, and receiving migrants from nearby areas and sending them to Seoul and other capital areas. To these migrants, Seoul shows lower ratio whereas all other large cities show higher ratios in owner-occupied housing. Seoul, Busan, Daegu receive highly educated professional producer service workers while send out high school educated skilled workers in manufacturing sector. Other large cities such as Inchon, Gwangju, Ulsan are in contrary to them, receiving high school educated skilled workers in manufacturing sector while sending highly educated professional workers in producer service sector. These findings provide an understanding the role of large cities in migration with respect to the population redistribution in geographic flow which are associated with social mobility.
