본 연구는 홍길주의 저작인 『孰遂念』에 대한 주제적 측면에서의 연구이다. 『숙수념』의 제8관인 「三事念」은 ``三事’에 대한 담론을 다루고 있는 장이다. ``삼사’ 중에서도 기용의 이용에 대한 담론에 초점을 맞추고 있는 것이 「삼사념」인데, 이 속에 제시되는 기물들은 기본적으로 ``삼사’에 관련된 담론의 현현물이라는 성격을 지닌다. 한편 이 「삼사념」에 놓인 기물 중 하나인 베틀은 그 자체가 『숙수념』의 은유이기도 하다. 즉 「삼사념」은 홍길주 자신에 의해서 『숙수념』 전체의 은유로도 해석되는 것이다. 이런 측면에서 ``삼사’ - 특히 이용후생의 이상을 둘러싼 담론은 『숙수념』의 세계를 구성하는 기획 이념으로 작용하고 있다고 보인다. 「삼사념」 속에 놓인 기물 중 하나인 여의침에 붙여진 「如意枕銘序」는 당대의 현실학문 풍토를 좌우했던 성리학과 고증학에 대한 비판과, 나아가 그 자신이 상당한 식견을 지니고 있던 도교나 불교적 취향에 대한 비판을 거쳐 ``삼사’의 학문적 결론에 도달하는 탐색의 경로를 환몽기의 형식으로 보여준다. 따라서 「삼사념」 전체의 서문에 해당한다. 「삼사념」의 기타 기물들과 기물명/찬을 통해서는 ``이용후생’과 관련된 갖가지 사고들을 드러낸다. 여기에는 현실의 음화로서의 환상세계라는 『숙수념』의 성격이 드러난다. 즉 「삼사념」에는 후생의 책임을 져야하는 지식인의 책임을 강조하고 자임하는 만큼, 현실적인 실현의 가능성에 좌절한 지식인의 자화상이 드러난다. 이 점에서 현실의 음화로서의 측면을 드러낸다. 한편 실용성에 초점을 맞추는 조선후기 이용후생학파의 삼사에 대한 이해와는 달리, 담론에 치중하거나 수학적ㆍ과학적 상상력 자체에 유희적으로 몰두한다는 점도 홍길주의 ``삼사’가 갖는 특징이다. 즉 홍길주의 「삼사념」은 실용성에는 큰 관심이 없어 보인다. 대표적인 이용후생지구에 대해서도 관념적으로 해석하는 명을 붙여놓았을 뿐이며, 수학적 기기를 창안하고 있지만, 실제 이 기구들에서 보게 되는 것은 실용성이 아니라 자족적인 수학적 상상력이기 때문이다. 이 점이 홍길주의 이용후생 관념이 실제 당대의 이용후생학파들의 이용 관념과 다른 지점이기도 하다.

This thesis aims to explore the theme of “Sug-Su-Nyeom(『孰遂念』)” through the chapter of “Sam-Sa-Nyeom(「三事念」)” from the book “Sug-Su-Nyeom” written by Hong-Gil-Ju(洪吉周). In the chapter “Sam-Sa-Nyeom” there is the prose “Yeo-Ui-Chim-Myeong-Seo(「如意枕銘序」)”, showing the Sug-Su-Nyeom`s fantasy-like features. Therefore the manuscript has its debate centered around the “Yeo-Ui-Chim-Myeong-Seo” especially. The “Yeo-Ui-Chim-Myeong-Seo” carries the structure of “journey to explore the truth.” This journey to explore the truth is a journey of exploration for academic ideal. This journey of exploration reaches something that is the ideal of academic study of “Sam-sa (三事).” The other parts of the “Sam-Sa-Nyeom,” include diverse discussions that are related to the conclusion that the “Yeo-Ui-Chim-Myeong-Seo” reaches - the goal of scholarly work is “to create convenient tools that make the people`s life much more fulfilling.” In this way it deals with the responsibilities of intellectuals who are in charge of the academic ideals and it also shows the pursuit of mathematic and scientific knowledge. At the same time, it shows the frustration of intellectuals who aren`t given realistic opportunities to act on their ideals. It also shows the tendency to be absorbed in a game of idea. As a result this is the true form of “Sug-Su-Nyeom.” In other words, “Sug-Su-Nyeom” is the world of reverse-reality that was created by intellectuals who eventually were unable to get the opportunity to realize that ideal although they were voluntarily in charge of the responsibility for “I-Yong-Hu-Saeng(利用厚生).”
