본 연구의 목적은 사회-성 교육 프로그램인 ``동그라미(Circles)``의 적용이 지적장애아동들의 부적절한 사회-성 행동을 감소시키는 데 효과가 있는지를 밝히는 것이었다. 5명의 지적장애아동들을 대상으로 대상간 중다기초선설계가 사용되었다. 본 연구의 사회-성 교육 프로그램은 총 l0회기로써, 미국에서 개발된 ``동그라미`` 프로그램을 연구대상자들의 능력과 다양한 현실적인 문제를 감안하여 본 연구자들이 재구성한 것이었다. 프로그램은 각 회기 당 50분씩 주 2회 실시되었다. 표적행동은 샤워하기, 화장실 이용하기, 신체노출 하기, 사적인 신체부위 만지기, 타인의 몸 만지기, 동성의 신체 만지기, 낯선 사람과 인사하기, 생리대 관리하기 등과 관련된 부적절한 사회-성 행동이었으며, 매일 빈도 기록법으로 측정되었다. 연구결과, 대상아동 5명 모두의 부적절한 사회-성 행동이 감소하였으며, 그 효과가 유지되었다. 본 연구의 의의, 제한점, 후속연구 문제 등이 논의되었다.

This study examined the effects of social-sexuality education program, the ``Circles``, on the social-sexuality behaviors of children with mental retardation. The participants were five mentally retarded children with social-sexuality behavior problems. This study used a multiple baseline across subjects design. The data were visually analyzed. The social-sexuality education program was adapted from ``Circles`` published in the U.S. The program was practiced in a form of group training. Each session was 50 minutes long and two sessions were held in a week. The dependent variable consists of inappropriate social-sexuality behaviors which were categorized as (a) inappropriate taking a shower, (b) inappropriate using a toilet, (c) inappropriate exposing his/her body, (d) inappropriate touching a part of his/her own body, (e) inappropriate touching other`s body, (f) inappropriate touching same gender`s body, (g) inappropriate greeting to unfamiliar persons, and (h) inappropriate managing her sanitary napkin. These behaviors were observed with a method of frequency record. The results of this study indicates that the problem behaviors of all subjects showed meaningful decrease and the behavior changes maintained after the termination of intervention. The findings of this study suggest that a social-sexuality education program using ``Circles`` can be effectively used to improve the social-sexuality behaviors of children with mental retardation. The meaning and limitations of this study were discussed.
