이 연구는 어휘 능력에 대한 성별, 세대별 차이를 분석하는 것이 목적이다. 지금껏 일반적으로 논의된 성별에 따른 언어 능력의 차이에 대해 어휘 능력에 초점을 두고, 세대 변인을 추가하여 성별과 세대에 따른 어휘 능력의 차이를 분석하였다. KBS 한국어 능력 시험의 어휘 문항을 기초 자료로 하였으며, 22,886명의 수험자를 연구 대상으로 하였다. 어휘 영역 전반과 네 가지 하위 차원의 평균 점수와 표준편차를 확인하기 위한 기술 통계 분석과, 성별과 세대를 독립변인으로 설정한 이원 배치 분산 분석을 실시하였다. 연구 결과 성별과 세대 변인의 조합에 따른 어휘 능력의 차이를 확인할 수 있었다. 전체 평균 점수는 여성이 높지만, 세대가 높아질수록 남성의 어휘 점수가 여성에 비해 높아진다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었으며, 이러한 현상에 대한 원인으로 한자 능력의 영향에 주목하여 논의하였다.

The purpose of this study was to examine the gender and generation differences in lexical competence. In the interests of learning more about the effective application way for lexical education, how gender and generation difference affects lexical competence and how each four dimension of lexical competence is affected by the two variables were the focus of the study. 22,886 examinees of 17th~19th KBS Korean language test participated. Descriptive statistics and two way Analysis of Variance were used in the analysis of data. The results revealed the statistically significant differences of lexical competence in gender and generation. The most interesting finding was that the understanding of Chinese character was the most influential factor in difference of lexical competence. Along with these findings, limitations of the study and implications for future research are discussed.
