The Spanish VP-ellipsis(VPE) constructions look different from the English counterpart. For this reason, some linguists like Chao(l987) and Cyrino & Matos(2002) have argued that in Romance languages like French and Spanish there is no straightforward equivalent form to the English VPE constructions and that these constructions are expressed by means of either Stripping or do it constructions. Thus, the aim of this paper is to discuss within the framework of generative grammar whether the VPE constructions exist or not in Spanish. We argue against Chao and Cyrino & Matos that the VPE constructions do exist in Spanish, although the form is different from the English counterpart. We first provide two pieces of empirical evidence for the existence of VPE in Spanish. We further argue that the reason why the Spanish VPE constructions look different from the English VPE constructions can be accounted for if we adopt the notion of the Phase Extension(den Dikken, 2006) and extend it to the Spanish VPE constructions.
