연구자는 문장 부호 규정에 대한 개정 필요성을 알아보기 위해서 설문조사를 실시하고 그 양상을 살펴보았다. 구체적으로 문장 부호 규정의 인지도 및 수용도, 문장 부호 규정의 필요성, 문장 부호 규정에 대한 만족도, 문장 부호 규정 개정을 통한 국민의 국어사용 변화 정도를 구분하여 조사를 실시하였다. 문장 부호의 필요성에 대해서 전문가들은 91.6%가 찬성하고 있으나 그 만족도는 38.6%밖에 되지 않고 있다. 또한 전문가들도 문장 부호를 인지는 잘 하고 있지만(81.2%), 그 규정을 직접 확인해 보지 않은 응답자가 무려 47.4%에 이르고, 28.7%는 문장 부호의 용법을 제대로 모르는 것으로 나타났다. 국어사용 변화 양상에 따라서 현행 문장 부호 규정이 바뀌어야 한다는 응답이 70.0%나 되고 있다. 사회의 변화에 따른 문장 부호 규정의 변화는 비단, 전문가들뿐만이 아니라, 국어생활 속에서 일상적으로 한글을 사용하는 일반인들을 위해서도 변화할 필요가 있다. 특히 일반인들을 위해서는 간략한 문장 부호 사용 매뉴얼 같은 것을 만들어서 보급하면 국민의 말글살이에 이바지하리라 생각한다.

We explore the survey in order to know the reform necessity of the norm of punctuation marks. Concretely, to know the degree of recognition and acceptance of the norm. the need of the norm, the satisfaction of the norm and the degree of change in the usage of the language. Experts agree the necessity of punctuation marks by 91.6%, but the degree of satisfaction is only 38.6%. And experts know punctuation marks norms well(81.2%), but 47.7% of them didn`t see the norms directly, further more 28.7% of them didn`t know usage method of punctuation marks correctly. 70.0% of experts agree that current punctuation marks must be changed according to aspects of korean usage change. Those changes must be appeared for not only experts but also ordinary people. Especially usage manual of punctuation marks will be needed for ordinary people, that is, the ordinary life of language.
