이 논문의 목적은 일본에서의 어휘 교육을 개관하는 데 있다. 일본어는 한자어 뿐 아니라 고유어에 대해서도 한자 표기를 사용한다는 점에서 어휘 교육에 있어서 한자 교육이 매우 큰 비중을 차지하고 있다. 한자 교육은 학년별로 교육할 한자 배당한 학년별 한자 배당표에 의해 이루어지고 있다. 학년별 한자 배당표는 국가가 정한 교육용 기초어휘표가 없는 일본에서 어휘목록을 대신하는 역할을 하고 있다. 현재 1학년에서 6학년까지 총 1,006자의 한자를 학습하도록 되어 있다. 이것은 음뿐만 아니라 훈까지도 외워야 하기 때문에 아동들에게 크게 부담이 되고 있는 것이 사실이다. 이를 증명하는 것이 한자습득률인데 읽기에서는 92.7%를 보여주고 있지만 쓰기에서는 66.2%밖에 정답을 쓰지 못한다는 결과가 있다. 이러한 불완전한 문자 사용 체계를 유지한다는 것은 매우 불합리한 것으로 개선이 필요하다고 할 수 있다. 일반 사회에서는 한자어를 외래어가 대신하는 변화가 급격히 진행되고 있다. 그러나 교육 현장에서는 점차 한자 교육을 강화하는 쪽으로 가고 있다. 이러한 불일치가 앞으로 일본의 교육에 어떠한 영향을 줄지 주목할 필요가 있다.

The purpose of this thesis is for the establishment of vocabulary education in Japan. The fact that Japanese uses Chinese characters for not only on Chinese based words but also on their native vocabulary indicates that teaching Chinese characters plays a big part in vocabulary education. Teaching Chinese characters is achieved through a list which demonstrates the Chinese characters needed to be educated at each grade. The list of Chinese character education by grade plays the role of a vocabulary list in Japan which does not have a educational basic vocabulary list. Presently 1,006 Chinese characters in total are required to be learned from grades 1 to 6. It can be said that children are put under big pressure as they have to learn both the sound and meaning of the Chinese characters. The rates for the Chinese character comprehension prove the above statement; the results show a 92.7% comprehension in reading while only 66.2% can actually write the answer. Maintaining this kind of a defective letter system is very irrational and thus can be said that it is necessary to make improvements. In the general society, the change of Chinese based words being substituted by foreign words is progressing rapidly. However in the educational scene more stress is being put on strengthening Chinese character education. There is a need to observe how this conflict will influence the Japanese education in the future.
