본고는 초고령 사회로 변모해 가는 현대 한국 사회의 변화상에 주목하여, 국어교육에서 주목해야 할 새로운 리터러시로서 ``노인 리터러시``를 제안하고, 논의의 필요성과 접근 방향 검토를 통해 국어교육의 확장과 심화의 한 방안을 제시하고자 하였다. ``노인 리터러시``는 신체적으로 노화의 증상이 뚜렷한 특정 연령대 세대의 정보 이해 및 표현 능력을 의미한다. 이때의 ``정보``는 모든 종류의 기호로 표상된 것을 포괄한다. ``소통·치유·공존``은 노인 리터러시 접근의 세 가지 방향성을 알려준다. 기능적 리터러시의 측면에서 ``소통``을 화두에 두고, 노인 리터러시의 특성과 구조를 분석적으로 검토할 수 있다. ``치유로서의 노인 리터러시``는 단순한 정보처리 과정으로서의 리터러시가 아닌, 문학 작품이라는 특수 텍스트를 매개로 하여 정서 공감, 성찰적 반성까지 가능하게 하는 리터러시를 구체화하고자 하는 것이다. 마지막으로는 ``소통``과 ``치유``를 통해 얻은 성과가 확산되어 ``공존``을 꾀할 수 있도록 교육의 문제를 다룰 수 있다.

The purposes of the study is to suggest ``literacy of old people`` as a novel literacy and propose a way of method of its extension through the review of its necessity and approaching methodology centering on the societal change of Korea into a super aging society. ``Literacy of old people`` denotes the competence of understanding information and expression on a specific age group which has noticeable symptoms of physical aging. And, in the sense, ``information`` includes every kinds of symbolic expression. ``Communication, treatment, and coexistence`` shows three orientations of approach toward ``literacy of old age``. On the functional perspective, focusing on ``communication`` its characteristics and structures can be structurally analyzed. ``Literacy of old age as treatment`` embodies literacy which promotes emotional sympathy and self-reflection through the medium of literary works as well as literary as a way of information processing. In the final chapter of the study educational problems will be addressed to suit ``coexistence`` by the expansion of fruitfulness of ``communication`` and ``treatment``.
