본고는 경쟁과 긍정적 사고가 우리 사회와 대학을 지배하는 주요 삶의 양식이자 이데올로기임을 밝히고 이를 극복하는 데 비판적 사고 교육이 어떤 의의를 지닐 수 있는지를 고찰하고자 한다. 1997년 외환위기 이후 우리 사회는 신자유주의 세계화의 영향 아래 무 한 생존 경쟁이 지배적인 삶의 양식이 되었으며 이는 우리의 경쟁 위주의 교육 체제와 맞물려 증폭되었다. 무한 경쟁 체제는 자유 경쟁이 불가피하고 바람직하다는 경쟁주의 이데올로기에 의해 뒷받침된다. 가혹한 경쟁주의 논리를 보완하는 이데올로기가 긍정주의로서, 긍정주의는 긍정적 사고가 성공과 행복을 가져오므로 부정적 사고를 멀리해야 하며 불행과 실패는 개인의 마음 탓이라고 주장함으로써 비판적 사고를 마비시킨다. 경쟁주의와 긍정주의는 대학에도 침투하여 학생들은 배려와 공감의 능력과 태도, 전체적·맥락적 사고 능력, 비판적 사고 능력 등을 계발하지 못하고 있다. 이러한 능력과 태도를 함양하기 위해서는 비판적 사고 교육이 필수적이다. 현재 비판적 사고 교육은 대체로 논리적 사고력 교육이 주를 이루고 있지만, 비판적 사고에는 능력 뿐만 아니라 태도 또는 성향이 포함되어 있다. 현재 우리 사회에서 대학생들이 함양해야 할 주요한 비판적 사고 성향으로는 자신에 대한 반성적 사고 성향, 타인에 대한 공감적 사고 성향, 전체적으로 사고하는 맥락 추구 성향, 행동과 삶의 의미를 묻는 의미 추구 성향 등이 있다. 능력과 성향을 모두 포함하는 비판적 사고에 대한 교육은 경쟁과 긍정적 사고로 인한 대학생들의 인성 왜곡에 맞서 비판적 지성의 산실이라는 대학의 전통적 이상을 회복하기 위해, 그리고 풍부한 감성과 높은 덕성을 갖춘 비판적 지성인의 양성이라는 전인 교육적 인성 교육의 이상을 실현하기 위해 가장 시급히 요청되는 교육이다.

The goal of this paper is to clarify that competition and positive thinking is the main forms of life or ideology in our society and colleges and that critical thinking education is significant in overcoming competition and positive thinking. Since the exchange crisis of 1997 limitless survival competition became the dominant forms of life in our society and it was amplified through the competitive educational system. Limitless competition system is supported by the competitionist ideology that insists on the inevitablity and desirability of free competition. Affirmativism compliments the brutal competitionism and asserts that positive thinking brings success and happiness and that negative thinking brings failure and unhappiness. Competitionism and affirmativism have permeated the universities and so students cannot develop their sympathetic attitude, contextual and critical thinking ability. To cultivate these abilities and attitudes critical thinking education is necessary. Critical thinking contains not only abilities but also attitudes or dispositions. It is necessary for our university students to develop reflexive, sympathetic thinking disposition and context-and meaning-persuing disposition. Critical thinking education should oppose distortion of students` character due to competition and positive thinking. Critical thinking education is necessary to realize the ideal of character education that is to cultivate the critical intellect with rich sensibility and high morality.
